We have created a hyperlink in a pdf document on our web site. The link will work for desktop computers, but does not work for smart phones. We don’t know why!

It will be a limitation of the PDF reader on your smartphone.
On a PC, Adobe Reader (& other Windows PDF readers) recognises them as hyperlinks, but the reader on your phone will be some other software which can’t do that.
Unfortunately, no version of Adobe Reader is compatible with smartphones, but you might be able to find a better PDF reader app which can do what you want.
Look in your particular smartphone’s app store.
