Android keyboard forcing word suggestions on me

Specs: several
For reasons I will not divulge, yesterday I did a factory reset
of my Android 4.4.2 tablet computer. It mostly went fine.
I apparently lost the last six months of bookmarks, which
was my fault, and the datestamps on all my files are now
yesterday, which is unexpected and highly unpleasant, but
not catastrophic.

But my keyboard has started giving me word suggestions as
I type this in. I have never seen that before. I have turned off
everything in the Android Keyboard Settings that looks like it
might control this function, and disabled the User Dictionary
app in Settings, but the suggestions keep appearing.

How can I stop it????

Sigh.

My mistake. Again.

It is a setting in the Android Keyboard Settings that I didn't
look at carefully enough. Many of the settings have checkboxes.
They are dark gray on a black background, so they aren't obvious
when they don't contain checkmarks. I thought the setting for
word correction suggestions had a checkbox, and since there
was no checkmark there, I thought the checkbox was empty.

But there is no checkbox. Instead one has to tap the text to
bring up a menu with three choices, one of which is to never
show correction suggestions. The text changes to reflect the
setting.
