just browsin web ruunin spybot s&d listening to music then xp just stops no errors with the hard disk lite flashing is it due for a clean install or is the hd on way out

Does it freeze completely? What happens if you do Ctrl-Alt-Delete? Have you disabled unnecessary services and/or run a defrag?

cannot move cursor no keyboard activity what so ever all i can do is press the restart button on pc

You need to run some basic diagnostics tests.
These kinds of lockups are usually associated with one of two problems.
1. overheating CPU or graphics card
2. Failing harddrive.

"maybe a clue but my hard drive is clicking"

Download a harddrive diagnostic tool from the HDD maker.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.
