Yesterday, I connected my linksys wireless router. The CD walked me through the set up, when I got to the end it asked if I wanted to install Norton 2006. When i tried to install it, my computer froze, so I restarted then tried to do it again, this time i opted not to install Norton. While the wireless connection works great, now my programs have a .lnk extension. This appears on the desktop and in my programs. I cannot access any web browsers, i tried rebooting, even in safe mode the programs do not work. I called microsoft and they could not help me, they said when I downloaded Norton it corrupted the files. HELP! What do I do?

See if you can do a system restore back to a date prior to installing the router. Then install the router again but decline Norton.

KJ, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...

If you can't access the Internet use another computer to download it onto a floppy or CD and transfer it to the problem computer. If you can't run the file do the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

Thank you both for your help. I will try both options and see what happens. Will I lose any of my files?

KJ, If you use System Restore you will only loose any programs and updates you installed since the Restore date you choose so try to use the closest Restore date prior to when the problem started.
