Make a Windows Start-Up diskette (bootdisk) NOW in Add-Remove programs
AND also make a copy of VMM32.VXD on another diskette.
Apply these next two modifications anyway as the system will run better as a
result.

Then try these as all of them help the system to run better.
Fit Delindex.bat using the delta command, (C:\Delindex.bat delta) setting it
up in your task-scheduler to run on boot-up (or Delta.bat). from:
http://www.burzurq.com/forum/delindex.html
Whilst you are there set up OTUNEUP.EXE to run as a weekly maintenance task
too. This will keep any Office programs running better, as it repairs their
file system, and this freeware program clears out the temporary file
folders.
http://www.danish-shareware.dk/soft/emptemp EmpTemp. Set it up to run at
start-up and automatically close again. Don't use the "EmpRunner" feature as
it uses
too much in the way of system resources.
Then run this over your system: SpyBot SD from: http://beam.to/spybotsd
Click on English flag. SpyBot is a very revealing program.
Then use this program to clean your registry,
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml Registry Power Tools.
You HAVE to be VERY CAREFUL with this new version. Backup Everything.
Do NOT use if you are not CERTAIN of what you are doing!
Run scandisk and use this free disk-defragmenter as it is MUCH faster than
defrag.exe and MUCH better too. Diskeeper Lite:
http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp
Or if you really know what you are doing and want to optimise your
swap-file: ( Good for ALL Windows Operating Systems )
VoptXP 7.13 for setting up an optimised swap-file: http://www.goldenbow.com
See: Tools, tune-Up, System, Unloading DLL's, connection tune-up, etc.
YOU MUST set the Min & Max values for virtual memory to the desired size
BEFORE you use the SAME values in setting up the paging-file with VoptXP.
Both settings should also be the SAME. e.g. Min=500Mb Max=500Mb.
Then to free up RAM add: http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.html
And set the recover limit to 15Mb.
Then you might want to consider: REMOVING SYSTEM RESTORE, PCHEALTH, WMP,
MOVIE-MAKER http://www.definition-software.com
You choose what to remove. All removals except Movie Maker are reversible
IF you have the Windows CD-ROM.
And then INCREASE THE RESTORE POINTS IN SCANREG.INI
Open C:\WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with Notepad and change the MaxBackupCopies=
value from 5 to the desired number. For example =14. (Two weeks.)

Improving System Resources in '95, '98, ME, 2000, XP. (See:
http://www.95isalive.com/tricks/unloadimage.htm for screen shots.)
Windows Explorer has a bad habit of keeping ALL of the DLLs in use in
memory.
For Windows '95, '98, Millennium Edition, 2000 & XP you can modify the
operating system to unload them when they are no longer in use.
This registry entry is used in Windows '98se which is one reason why it
works better.
Open Regedit then go to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]
Make sure it contains a Key value, AlwaysUnloadDll with the Default value
set to 1.
If not right click explorer and then click new key. Rename the new key:
AlwaysUnloadDll
Now right click Default, click modify and set the value at 1.
This change does not apply to older 16 bit DLLs. Some programs may give an
invalid page fault message, or crash the system.
To turn it off: Change the value to "0".
If you do not have any errors, this setting speeds up operation, freeing
RAM and returning it to the system.
Close the Registry Editor, and restart Windows to effect the change.

You can add this change automatically using VoptXP from www.goldenbow.com
in: Tools, Tune-up, System, Dll's unloading.

Stop Windows USER TRACKS in their tracks!
In Reply to: Six registry keys I am curious about posted by CJ on the
Internet.
To stop logging create a Key under UserAssist by right-clicking on the
UserAssist key. ("Folder")
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAss
ist
And call it ... Settings ... i.e.:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAss
ist\Settings
Add a DWORD entry with the name NoLog click on the new entry and change the
value from 0 to 1
Put another entry in the same settings key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAss
ist\Settings
Add a DWORD entry with the name NoEncrypt click on the entry and change the
value from 0 to 1
so that Windows does not 'encrypt' the text of the registry key names.
This does not decrypt the current entries. (ROT 13)
