Let me clue you into a little secret. All "optimization" programs can cost you overhead. That slows your computer down. I used to work for Symantec supporting Norton Utilities so I know a bit about it.

There are some basic rules to optimizing your system. Scandisk and defrag your hard drive regularly. Only install software you need. Remember that "demos" and software freeforall installs, even when removed, leave registry entries behind which slow your system down. Do regular disk maintenance like taking out the garbage or deleting temp files. There is a lot you can do in the way of software like memory management and caching softwares but again they also provide overhead which slows the system. You must also remember that you can't makeup with software what is lacking in hardware. Its like asking a VW bug to be a Porche.

A Celeron based system is always going to seem a little slow with Windows ME. The only way to Optimize (as noted in #2) is to remove unneeded programs and junk. Start with System Tools - Disk CleanUp, Scandisk, and Defrag once a week.

Then add AD-Aware_Lavasoft.nu and/or SpyBot to remove any junk programs that slow your system down.

Next you can use Start - RUN - msconfig - Startup tab to remove TaskMonitor and PCHEALTH from startup. Reboot and the go to System Tools - Scheduled Tasks and delete the PCHEALTH and TUNEUP icons. These programs are next to useless, collecting useless tracking data, and slow your system down.

Windows Explorer has a bad habit of keeping ALL of the DLLs in use in
memory.

For Windows '95, '98, Millennium Edition, 2000 & XP you can modify the
operating system to unload them when they are no longer in use.

This registry entry is used in Windows '98se which is one reason why it
works better.

Open Regedit then go to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]

Make sure it contains a Key value, AlwaysUnloadDll with the Default value
set to 1.

If not right click explorer and then click new key. Rename the new key:
AlwaysUnloadDll

Now right click Default, click modify and set the value at 1.

This change does not apply to older 16 bit DLLs. Some programs may give an
invalid page fault message, or crash the system.

To turn it off: Change the value to "0".

If you do not have any errors, this setting speeds up operation, freeing
RAM and returning it to the system.

Close the Registry Editor, and restart Windows to effect the change.

REMOVING NETWORK ICON

To remove the network icon you have to do open regedit.exe by typing in
regedit at, start > run, and go to:

Click DWORD to create a new entry
