HEEEEELP!

I have a serious problem with Windows 2000.

I just have two computers, one with Win2k and Win98se on it and the other just with Windows 98SE on it....

I cannot enter Windows 2000, because of a registry error. I did not take the oppertunity to create the ERD disks! - Stupid!

This is a major problem because I need to get back to the original Windows 2000 (pro) that I installed. I can't create the ERD disks for Win2k from Win98, so i cant fix the registry at the moment!

I tried installing Windows 2k from Win98 again and once installed I get the 'blue screen of death' with a 'comdlg32.dll' error.

I tried installing the setup disks from the Windows 2k CD, howvever when i get to the recovery prompt in that, i cant seem to restore the registry through that! (is there any special method to do it manually?)

Where could i download the Windows 2000 ERD?, [tried microsoft.com :)] or is there any other manual method of restoring the registry/file system(?)

I cannot format, fdisk or re-install Win2k ! my only two options are above, or so i believe!

:) ANY HELP GRRRREAAAATLY APRECIATED!

(or, an email of the ERD disk(s?) whould be also greatly appreciated, cgraha@shcs.sa.edu.au/!!!)

Have you tried the Repair option during the install? Boot from the W2k CD and begin the installation. Select Repair when prompted. It will ask for the ERD but if you don't have it, it will look in the winnt\repair folder on the computer because this folder is also updated when an ERD is created and also at installation.

- start recovery console with your CD-rom.
- goto %systemroot%\repair
- copy all the registry files (one by one) to %systemroot%\system32\config.

reboot machine and you will have the registry installed that was backed up just after the first installation of your w2K.

tip: its a good idiea that you do a system state backup with ntbackup once and a while. this copies the registry to %systemroot%\repair\regback.
then can you restore your registry from their and you will have a more resent restore.

I hope this helps

systemroot is your winnt foder or if you named it somthing else % signs are variables.

when you make like a script and you use %systemroot% the computer automaticly knows that you mean your winnt folder or wathever you named it!
