Key Highlights
- OpenAI has reached an agreement to acquire Astral, a company specializing in open source Python development tools
- The Astral team will integrate with OpenAI’s Codex AI coding assistant division
- Weekly active users of Codex have surpassed 2 million, representing a threefold increase since January
- This strategic move positions OpenAI to compete more effectively with Anthropic and Cursor in AI-powered coding solutions
- The companies have kept financial details private; regulatory clearance remains pending
OpenAI revealed on Thursday its plans to bring Astral into its organization, a company recognized for creating open source development tools tailored for Python programmers.
The Astral team will become part of OpenAI’s workforce, focusing their efforts on Codex, the AI-powered coding assistant. The companies chose to keep the acquisition price confidential.
Astral has established a prominent position within the Python developer ecosystem. The company’s tools focus on enhancing speed and dependability during Python code creation.
Charlie Marsh, who founded and leads Astral as CEO, emphasized that the company’s mission remains unchanged following the acquisition. “To make programming more productive. To build tools that radically change what it feels like to build software,” he stated in a published blog post.
Marsh provided assurance that Astral’s open source tools will remain available and maintained once the acquisition receives final approval.
OpenAI introduced its Codex platform during the previous year and rolled out a dedicated desktop application earlier in 2026. According to company reports, Codex has attracted more than 2 million weekly active users.
This user count reflects a threefold expansion since January began. Overall usage has climbed fivefold during this same timeframe.
Competition Intensifies Between OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cursor
The market for AI-driven coding tools has experienced rapid expansion throughout the past twelve months. OpenAI faces direct competition from Anthropic, whose Claude Code tool has attracted significant developer adoption.
Cursor represents another competitor that has cultivated a dedicated base of software developers. OpenAI aims to expand Codex’s reach and narrow the competitive distance.
The Astral transaction awaits standard closing requirements, which include obtaining regulatory clearance.
This acquisition aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy of pursuing growth through acquisitions. The organization brought on Albert Lee from Google in December to oversee corporate development initiatives.
Recent Acquisition Activity Accelerates
OpenAI completed a $6.4 billion purchase of io, Jony Ive’s AI devices venture, in May 2025. The company also announced plans earlier this month to acquire Promptfoo, a cybersecurity-focused startup.
During January, OpenAI brought Torch, a health-care technology company, into its portfolio. The Astral transaction extends this acquisition streak.
Microsoft provides backing for OpenAI. The organization has pursued expansion initiatives across numerous product categories while navigating increasing competition throughout the AI industry.
Bringing Astral into the fold represents OpenAI’s most recent effort to solidify its standing in AI-enhanced developer tools.
The fivefold surge in Codex usage since January represents the most current growth metrics OpenAI has released regarding the product’s performance.
