Subject: Yellow Triangle w/ Exclamation Mark
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron
Model/Manufacturer: Dell
Comment:

My computer has some kind of virus that changes the background to a spyware warning, disables the control/alt/delete and has a triangle with an exclamation point that comes up in the bottom right hand corner just before it starts popping up ads. It's driving me crazy and no scan I run will detect the problem. I have PCCillin on my computer and it constantly runs scans and says nothing harmful found. My computer is running slower and slower everday. Please help!

Download a copy of Dr.Web CureIt. http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/

Unplug your network cable from the PC.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:

* Double-click on cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
* Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
* Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
* Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
* Back at the main window, click "Custom Scan", then "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen).
* Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
* When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
* Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
* Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
* Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
* Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
* Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Fix anything it finds unless you know it's a false positive.

Then boot normally and scan again, again repeating until you get a clean no infection scan.

Any further troubles (you keep cleaning the same thing over and over, or it doesn't work) we'll need to have a look at a hijackthis log.

I ran the scan that you recommended and it didn't find much at all. I'm still having the same problems and when reading another thread earlier I saw someone with the same symptoms. The person helping her said she had Vundo. I went ahead and downloaded and ran the HijackThis report. Here it is:

Please download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sec...
http://download.bleepingcomputer.co...
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
------
* Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
3. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
4. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
5. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Good morning. I tried to run the combofix at 5:30 this morning. It said it was almost finished, but when it tried to rebooot it just sat there for over an hour with a background but no icons or toolbar. I had to manually shut it down and turn it back on and now I can't find the report from combofix. I'm not sure what to do!

Okay, I'm at work right now but will do it tonight when I get home. Thank you again so much for all of your help. This is the most frustrating thing!

One more question...I was just sitting at work reading about Vundo (which is what I'm assuming my computer has) and I saw that there are several removal tools out there; one being by Symantec. Do these not work?

Got to go out for about 1 1/2 hours, do this as well. You may not have all these files. When finished, post a new HJT log.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items:
Close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Sorry it took me so long...computer is running very slowly. It takes 10 minutes to bring the icons up everytime I reboot. The desktop background is still the spyware warning and that triangle and popups keep coming up. I don't think the triangle ever leaves the taskbar now. UGH! Here is the last SmitfraudFix report. I will go and do your last post directions now and post that report. Thank you again for your help!

Ok, now uninstall ComboFix.

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.

3. Download it again & run in Normal mode.

If it won't finish in Normal Mode, try Safe Mode.

Post 3 logs if you can.

How do I uninstall it...I can't find it in my add/remove programs list and there's not option to uninstall when I right click it on my desktop. Sorry, I'm a bit computer challenged!

Just to let you know, that if we can finish this session with you having a clean computer would be best. I am part of a singing group that is involved in our Australia Day celebrations & it could be 30 hours before I am able to provide more help. I shall put out a SOS on your behalf if we don't finish.

I accidentally ran another scan that froze my computer again, then realized what you were saying about uninstalling it. I just got it uninstalled and am getting ready to reinstall and try to scan again. I will email you if you'd like, but not sure if I can get on email while scanning???

Oh my goodness...I'm so excited! Combofix actually finished, deleted a bunch of files and gave me a report! Here it is...I'll run the HijackThis and SmitfraudFix now. I think that's what you meant by 3 logs?
