OK, I've got 2 HP's, a desktop and a laptop, both running Win XP Home. Desktop is an Intel Celron and and the Laptop is an AMD 64. I've got a netgear 4-port router and a netgear wireless access point plugged into the router. The laptop is wireless and works great. I want to share files between the two. Both computers have access to the internet, I've named them and run the network wizard, I can even "see" each them from the other computer when I go to network neighborhood. I was able to map the laptop drive to the desktop computer, but I have no access to the desktop computer from the laptop. I have turned off all firewalls (I use Trend Micro), checked all subnet masks, got into the router software, everything. I can ping the desktop from the laptop and it comes back good, but that's it.

Also, I originally couldn't do anything between the computers until I installed the NetBeui protocol, and only then could I access the Laptop from the Desktop.

When in Network Neighborhood on the Laptop, if I click on the Desktop computers icon it says "\\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this computer... etc..." and "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." I've done everything I can think of to give the proper permissions, but nothing works. I use the same login name on both computers and am the 'administrator' for them as well. I can't even see my Desktop's printer from my laptop, and I've "shared" everything!!!

I've searched this forum as well as www.wown.com, but can't seem to find an answer.

Ok, I actually found my own fix. Here it is!

File sharing with Windows XP HOME Edition - Fixes.

Section 1

When you double click on the computer (in My Network Places/Workgroup) that you are trying to access the shared files from you may get this message:

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

If you see this message the following should be done on the computer containing the shared files:

Download the following and install it

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544

after installation is complete, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

Now when you click on the computer (using My Network Places) you are trying to get the shared files from, the message will not appear and you can access the shared files. If the same type of error message appears but says ‘ACCESS DENIED’ instead of ‘Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer’ continue to the next section.

Section 2

When you double click on the computer (in My Network Places/Workgroup) that you are trying to access the shared files from you may get this message:

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions

Access Denied

If you see this message the following should be done on the computer containing the shared files:

Click START

RUN

Type regedit and press enter

Now find the following key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

Double click on ‘restrictanonymous’ and change the Value Data from 1 to 0

Exit regedit and reboot the computer

Now when you click on the computer (using My Network Places) you are trying to get the shared files from the message will not appear and you can access the shared files.

Firstly, well done on doing the research and solving your own problem, Microsoft technet is a mine of information.
Just one point regarding the fix (I'm surprised its not mentioned in the article), be aware of the security implications regarding allowing anonymous access to your machine. A much safer way is to set up the same user account on each machine and use that to access shares.

How would I go about doing that? And with the computers both being hooked up to a router that is 'supposed' to have a firewall, do I need to worry about it? I've also enabled the WEP encryption on my wireless access point, so unless somebody REALLY wants to read my homework on Computational Fluid Dynamics, I'm not to worried about that either. What do you think?
