Comment:
Hi folks,

I would like to run an Apple pro keyboard USB on a PC. I have tried this on a PC WIN 95 and it comes up with a warning error UNKNOWN DEVICE....
Is it possible that WIN 98 has an Apple USB driver?
Any suggestions on how I can achieve compatability would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Steve,

I seem to think that it has more to do with the internal wiring of the keyboard?

First check if in your PC BIOS the support
for USB Keyboard is enabled (In AWARD
BIOS try at INTEGRATED
PERIPHERALS). You should use your PC
documentation to get in BIOS. Then,
maybe, will work only with Windows 98,
Millenium or 2000. Try any generic driver
for USB Keyboard

I just bought a apple pro keyboard a few days ago, and i'm using it with windows 2000, and i tell you, it just works fine. Not only the usual keys, but also the usb-ports and the media keys (except the eject one)
I haven't installed any drivers, my windows has just recognized the keyboard and it works! (So do my bios. (ASUS P3BF))
In The Device Manager it is listet as HID-blabla -Device)
If you can find a driver please mail me.

I've got an apple Pro keyboard and it works great with windows 98, so it's probably just windows 95 that doesn't like it. If I remember correctly, the original 95 didn't support usb well-- you needed a service pack update.

Like the last poster said, the keys work great. The volume controls work, but no eject. The "help" key works as an insert key (it's in the same place). The Apple key works as -- surprise -- a windows key. The Control and Alt are in reverse positions from my dell keyboard, but work as labeled. The three new keys -- F13-F15 don't do anything, so you lose the functionality of the keys that were there before:

Printscreen (the only one I used)/SysRq
Scroll Lock
Pause/Break

Linux 2.2.? (RH 7.0) also recogonized the keyboard fine. F13-F15 don't return Xwindows codes at all, so it might be a little harder to make these do things.

I am running the Apple USB keyboard with Windows ME with no problems. However, I can only attach one USB device to the keyboard port as there is not enough power for a second. Does anyone know if the Apple optical or "hockey puck" mouse will work in Windows?

Do you guys now how to reboot the pc computer from the keyboard if you're using the apple pro keyboard?

It would greet to know. I tried alt control delete on the g3 keyboard but that doesn't work. I'm going to buy the apple pro but just wanted to check to see if there is any way to restart.

Thanks a lot

Yep, you can send the 'control-alt-delete' command by using control-option-period(on the numeric keypad with out numlock on {press clear to disable numlock})

been using my Apple Pro keyboard with ME for a while now, it also worked with 98, 98se, 2000, and a few different linux kernels.. only problem is that with ME the USB hub in the keyboard does not have a supported driver in ME, so if you upgrade to ME from 98se it will work fine, however if you do a clean install of ME the internal hub will reset from time to time. I'm in the process of finding a better driver to fix that problem...

Hi,
using w2k the apple keyboard runs just fine.
I created a .reg - file that maps F13-F15 to Print Screen, Scroll Lock and Break.
Maybe this helps you

Copy this to a file with ending .reg and execute the file.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,46,E0,5F,00,46,00,5E,00,37,E0,5D,00,00,00,00,00

Happy working :-))

I am using the Apple Pro keyboard with windows XP and it installed easily and works great.

However, I tried Rogue's registry edit, and it did not remap my f13-f15 keys.

Though I *can* live without these keys, any ideas on getting these 3 keys to work with XP would be appreciated!

I have been using an Apple Pro keyboard with two PCs
(self built, both running Win2K - one is Prof and the
other one Advanced Server) and a Power Mac
G4/AGP using a USB KVM Switch for many months
with great success.

The only problems I have encountered are:

1. One of the PCs uses a mainboard with a VIA
chipset. VIA's chipsets have known problems with
USB. The symptom that I experience is that after
being up for a while when I switch to this system it
does not re-enumerate the USB devices when they
connect up to it, so the mouse and keyboard do not
work. This is not a fault with the keyboard but with
the chipset. It normally works after I have switched to
this system a few times to "kick" it back into
recognising the USB devices have been reconnected.

2. An inconvenience is that the @ and ' keys are
reversed for Win2K. Any kind person who could
provide a reg file to remap this would be much
appreciated. This problem may be particular to the UK
keyboard where the @ key is positioned as Shift 2 - I
can't recall where it is on US keyboards.

3. Ctrl-Alt-Del works in exactly the same way as with
a PC keyboard with these same three keys - the Del
key is the bottom left corner of the keypad above the
cursor keys.

Regarding Nicholas Pospishil's question about using Apple's Optical Mouse under Windows: I've used it under Win98 SE with no problems. It even lists correctly under Device Manager. Also, regarding not being able to attach more than one device to the Apple Keyboard: The USB ports on the Apple Pro Keyboard are unpowered and are designed to only be used for pointing devices.

I too have been using an Apple Pro keyboard with two PCs (self built)and a Power Mac G4 733MHz. I also use a USB KVM Switch. I am using a Linksys Router, with Dave 3.1. My only problem is in booting up the pc, the computer will not recognize the mouse unless the KVM is switched to the pc. Therefore, I have a 2nd mouse, attached to the PS2 port, which activates the mouse function at Log In.

I'm having problems with sharing an
apple keyboard and mouse between pc
and g4. The keyboard/mouse works fine
on pc (running win 2000) and using Dr
Bott moniswitch. It also works on the G4
but when I switch over to the pc and come
back to the g4, the keyboard and mouse go
dead. I'm running 9.2.2 and didn't use this
config with previous OS versions so can't
say if it's related to this.
Any help would be appreciated.

I found a solution: install Microsoft's IntelliType 4 software. Claim your keyboard is a Natural Keyboard Pro, & F13 is mapped to PrintScreen. The software/driver also doesn't interfere with the volume keys.

I want to get an apple pro mouse to use with my pro keyboard on my PC.

But what do you do about the missing right mouse button? How do you bring up those contextual menus? You can't use the application key as a right-button replacement because the pro keyboard doesn't have that key. Any ideas?

just found out that shift-f10 is *supposed* to be the way to right-click using the keyboard.

But I just tried using this key combo to save a picture off of a webpage-- there is no "save picture as" context menu popping up-- which you do get when you right-click on the pic with a mouse...

so what do you guys do that are using the pro mouse with windows?

CSever - The current version of Intellitype is v2.11. I tried that and F13 still doesn't map to PrtScrn. Any thoughts?

All - what about swapping option and apple key so that Windows Alt is on the Apple key? Is there any way to do this?

Thanks!

instead of intellitype, i found AppleKeys at http://www.justthom.com/applekeys

and it works! volume key still works, and F13=prtscrn, F14=scroll lck, F15=break.

now if I can find one to swap the Option and Apple key (so that the Alt is next to Space key instead of the middle), that would be great

And also checkout Remapper XP (NT/2K/XP only). Choose "Left WinKey as AltGr" and reboot. You get

Left alt key: Alt
Left apple key: Alt (in the regular position)
Right apple key: Windows
Right alt akey: Alt

This gives you Alt in the regular position, at least if you use the left one (which I do). Remapper XP doesn't have a residence program, so it works nicely.

Keyboard Layout Manager, or KLM, is an excellent piece of shareware/freeware for remapping your keys. I use it to change letter-key layouts, but it also lets you tinker with the other keys. I'm using the freeware version on a ps/2 keyboard.

Can someone give it a try and tell me if it works for Apple's USB keyboard on a PC please? I'm thinking of buying a MoniSwitch and need some confirmation.

KLM's website is:

Hi All,

I used klm to remap the keys, however after I saved and rebooted my keyboard and mouse no longer worked! After pissing about reinstalling drivers I finally got them to work again.

the program AppleKeys works great for remaping f13-15 to print screen etc, but it has to be run every time you start windows. Its not a problem if you just stick in your Startup folder.

I still haven’t found a way to correct the keyboard layout though.

If anyone out there finds a way to do this or a better solution that applekeys then can you email me ross_designer@hotmail.com . I would appreciate any feedback on this subject.

Thanks.

If You did not connect the keyboard during installation, You have to log on with the old keyboard first and then plug in the new Apple keyboard. After the automatic installation of the device driver, You can remove Your old keyboard.

"long click" mean stay clicked for a while.
