There is loads of good reading at the Linux Documentation Project website (http://www.tldp.org), especially good for people migrating from windoze is this: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO.html It is getting rather dated now but still covers the basics.
If you've been playing around with computers for a while you should be able to get a bootable linux installation disk and find your way around. You may also want to try one of the "Live" (run-from-cd) versions like Slax or Knoppix first.
