Step1
Boot up with you win98 startup disk and create a fat32 8gb partition using fdisk.
And format it.
Step2
Then start computer with freedos 1.0 CD inserted, and do a full install.
Step3
Start computer again with ubuntu CD and when it gets to partitioner, setup a linux swap partition that is 3 times that of your installed ram (plus double if you intend to upgrade RAM later). Then make an ext3 root partition that uses the remaining space of the drive, reason I choose EXT3 is thats journaling ability adds better error recovery than a plain ext2 system. Also make sure your dos partition is mounted vfat as /dos. If all went smoothly then you should have a linux system that is DOS/WINDOWS compatible and will allow you access your data
from dos (if you store on the /dos drive)
