Printer ERROR!

Lately my HP PSC 2355 all in one have refused to function.

everytime i try to use the printer it locks up giving different results on the display screen of the printer.

sometimes its a blue screen with a hexidecimal error and IRQ error.
Sometimes the screen freezes, either goes blank, the progress bar stops or multi colour lines appear.

during this time i am unable to turn off or on the printer..

Sometimes more sophisticated USB connected devices such as printers, mutifunction units, scanners, or cameras, etc. will not work properly despite the fact other USB connected devices work fine if ANY of your USB controllers share their IRQ with ANY another device. It's fine for the USB controllers to use the same IRQ for several USB controllers, but it's a no-no to share that IRQ with other devices, unless the device is built into the mboard.
With the multifunction unit disconnected, take a look at System Information (e.g. Start - Run - type: msinfo32 , click OK).
Look on the left side under Hardware Resources - IRQs.
If any device other than something built into the mboard itself is using the same IRQ as a USB controller, other than other USB controllers, you need to fix that situation.
E.g. If the device is a card in a slot, or if you have a USB controller card in a slot, remove the AC power to your computer case/power supply, open up the case, and move the card to another slot if there any free. Don't use the last PCI slot at the closest to the center of the mboard end - it is forced to share it's IRQ with the video - unless you have no choice. If there are no slots free, change which card is in which slot, but don't use the last PCI one, as above, unless you have no choice.
Restore the AC power to the case/power supply, go to System Information again and see if the USB controllers no longer share an IRQ with any other device other than another USB controller or a device built into the mboard.

If you DID find that a USB controller was sharing it's IRQ with some device other than the above exceptions, after you have cured that, you should also force Windows to re-load it's USB stack.
Go into Device Manager (e.g. RIGHT click on My Computer - Properties - Hardware tab, Device Manger button) and open up Universal Serial Bus Controllers, RIGHT click on each and every listing there and Un-install them, reboot, and the USB stack will be re-built automatically.

When the USB controllers no longer share an IRQ with other than a device allowed for in the above, and the USB stack has been reloaded, plug in the multifunction unit and try it.
At the very least you should no longer get any messages about IRQs.

You may need to un-install and re-install the multifunction unit's drivers and applications as well.

Did/do you have the USB cord for the multifunction unit plugged into a port in a USB hub rather than a port directly connected to the mboard?
Using a USB port in a multiple port USB hub connected to one USB port directly connected to the mboard, or a USB port in a multiple port USB hub connected to one USB port in a USB controller adapter or card, does not support all the USB devices a directly connected to the USB controller port will, even if the hub is "powered" and can supply 500ma to every port even if all ports are used. If you have the USB cord plugged into a port in such a hub, try plugging it into the directly connected ports on the mboard instead - the ones on the edge of the mboard in the I/O area are the best ones to try


Did/do you have the USB cord for the multifunction unit plugged into a port on the front of your case, or a port in a plate in a slot at the back of you case, both of which connect to a header on the mboard, rather than a port directly connected to the mboard at the edge of the mboard in it's I/O area? If so, sometimes the wiring to front USB ports on the case, or to ports in a plate in a slot space, are inadequate - try plugging it into the directly connected ports on the edge of the mboard instead.

I know from previous experience with a PSC 1210 that that is very good advice.

I wasted a lot of time trying to t-shoot that multifunction unit's software not working properly, to no avail. (The unit and it's software worked fine initially, and for a long while after that.)
Un-installing and re-installing the drivers and applications for it cured all the problems immediately.
Just make sure you follow the installation directions properly - e.g. usually you install the software FIRST, and in latter stages of that, THEN you plug in the USB cord to the unit (and it's power may have to be ON the first time - it will turn on automattically after that if it is capable of that and settings allow it).

If that doesn't help (it may not if you previously had another model HP Printer or multifuction unit installed - the un-install doesn't remove anywhere near everything it installed) there is a HP software cleanup utility on the HP site you can use, then installing the drivers and associated applications will give you no problems.

well the all in one printer allows the user to use it while not connected to the computer.

so even when the computer switched off the same happens again. the screen locks up and does the same.

i have tried uninstalling the drivers and software but no luck.

i am still waiting for a repsonse from the HP site,
