Comment:
hi
i got this system from a friend of a friend, and it's a pentium 4 northwood at 2.66ghz, 1gb sd ram, etc.
however, when booted, the bios displays a message that the board is not compatible with that processor due to the 533mhz fsb, so the fsb is reduced to 400mhz and the cpu runs at 2ghz instead.
and to make things worse, it displays this message every single boot!
what can i do? or should i just find someone who'll trade a faster than 2ghz northwood that has a 400mhz fsb?
Hopefully it was given to you or you got it for next to nothing? Were you aware of this "problem" before you got it?
"what can i do?"
Either get a motherboard that's compatible with the 533MHz FSB CPU or get a CPU that's supported by the board you have. Or do nothing & live with it as-is.
If you cant overclock your cpu I would not get another as you will not see much of a gain. Why did your "friend of a friend" get a 533 cpu for a 400 board. I smell something funny about this...
like i said, he's not my friend. more like an acquaintance of a friend.
the trouble of finding a replacement board is that this one uses SD-RAM. there's a gig of it, but it's still SD-RAM.
since this P4 is running at 2.0ghz with 512k L2 cache, i have the opportunity of trading this P4 running at 2.0ghz for a celeron 2.4ghz, and it will work in the board because it has a 400mhz fsb. what difference will i see in performance?
if nothing, then how can i at least speed up the post screen and make it post faster? it takes ages to post. it eventually does, but still.
The celeron will be lower in performance due to the 128kb cache although it will be faster in some tasks but overall slower and the speed increase would be unnoticable. Stick with what you have until you can afford a real upgrade.
i eventually convinced the guy to give me a refund, minus 20 bucks because i modified the hardware (the thermal paste NEEDED to be replaced), so i agreed and i'm getting most of my money back.
won't deal with him again, that's for sure! next time, i'll make sure that it works as advertised.
