Amazon (AMZN) shares climbed 0.99% on Tuesday following the company’s announcement of expanded 1-hour and 3-hour delivery capabilities throughout portions of America.
The announcement arrived on March 17, 2026, marking another milestone in Amazon’s ongoing quest to reduce delivery windows for its customer base.
The 3-hour delivery tier has reached more than 2,000 cities and towns nationwide. The 1-hour option currently serves hundreds of these communities.
Customers can choose from over 90,000 items through this expedited service. The product catalog spans everyday essentials like pantry items, non-prescription medications, household cleaners, apparel, and children’s toys.
Prime subscribers face a $9.99 charge for 1-hour delivery and $4.99 for the 3-hour window. Those shopping without Prime membership will encounter fees of $19.99 and $14.99 for the same tiers.
The retail giant utilizes its established Same-Day Delivery infrastructure to support these new speed options. Amazon has introduced dedicated search filters labeled “in 1 hour” and “in 3 hours” alongside a specialized storefront page in eligible zones. Customers can also navigate to Amazon’s getitfast website for browsing.
“Our customers are busier than ever and are looking for new ways to save time while keeping their households running,” said Udit Madan, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations.
Madan added: “We’re excited to say that two decades after Prime launched, we’re still innovating to make delivery even faster, while maintaining the same everyday low prices and vast selection Amazon is known for.”
Amazon introduced complimentary two-day shipping through Prime in 2005. The company elevated same-day delivery to standard status in 2019 following massive investments in its logistics network.
Evolution of Speed-Focused Delivery Programs
Amazon has explored ultra-rapid delivery options before. The standalone Prime Now service ended operations in 2021. A 2024 initiative partnering with physical retail stores and shopping centers for quick fulfillment also concluded.
These earlier ventures had limited lifespans, yet Amazon continues pursuing faster delivery solutions.
The company currently operates “Amazon Now,” a trial program delivering everyday items and fresh produce within 30 minutes. This experiment runs in Seattle and Philadelphia domestically, while also operating in the UAE, India, Brazil, and Mexico.
Amazon has dedicated more than ten years to developing drone delivery technology, beginning with two limited test regions before growing to multiple American cities.
Competitive Landscape
This expansion arrives as competing retailers enhance their own rapid fulfillment capabilities. Walmart reports the ability to serve 95% of U.S. households within three hours, utilizing its extensive brick-and-mortar footprint.
Quick-commerce services including Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats deliver from an expanding roster of merchants within two hours or less.
Amazon revealed it began testing the 1-hour and 3-hour delivery options through limited trials in late 2025 and plans to extend coverage to additional regions throughout the upcoming months.
