    Key Highlights

    • Microsoft’s approximately $13B investment has ballooned to roughly $228B — delivering a 17x return
    • SoftBank deployed $64.6B and has secured gains exceeding $50B, with holdings valued at approximately $99.3B
    • CEO Sam Altman maintains zero ownership stake in OpenAI
    • The OpenAI Foundation maintains 25.8% ownership acquired at no cost — while retaining complete control over board appointments
    • Nvidia faces a minor loss, holding a $30.1B investment now valued at $29.6B

Ownership documents detailing OpenAI’s investor structure have emerged online since early April. The information was shared on X by investor Sheel Mohnot and seems to draw from public filings combined with secondary-market analysis. The data positions OpenAI’s post-money valuation at $852 billion after completing a $122 billion financing round.

The OpenAI cap table tells two stories at once.

Microsoft put in $13B and is sitting on $228B. 17.6x. Ashton Kutcher's Sound Ventures put in $30M and has $1.3B. 43x. Original 2015-era angels invested $10M and are looking at ~140x.

The documentation outlines ownership percentages, initial investments, and profit multipliers for each significant backer. These figures provide the most transparent view to date regarding who will benefit when OpenAI pursues a public listing.

Microsoft emerges as the top performer in the ownership structure. The tech giant deployed approximately $13 billion through multiple investment rounds — beginning with $1 billion in 2019, followed by $10 billion during January 2023, plus an additional $2 billion in 2024. The company’s 26.79% ownership position now carries an estimated value of $228.3 billion, representing approximately 17.6x returns. No comparable investor achieves this combination of scale and multiple.

Microsoft’s quarterly 10-Q reports validate the $13 billion total investment amount. OpenAI identified Microsoft as a material business consideration in recent investor communications, referencing revenue distribution agreements and exclusive cloud infrastructure commitments.

SoftBank has deployed $64.6 billion into OpenAI, establishing itself as the dominant cash contributor beyond Microsoft. The firm’s 11.66% ownership translates to approximately $99.3 billion in current value. SoftBank has accumulated gains surpassing $50 billion on this investment. CNBC verified that SoftBank completed funding its $40 billion pledge by December 2025, utilizing a $40 billion bridge financing arrangement from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs.

    Pioneer Investors Captured Exceptional Returns

First-wave investors secured the most impressive return multiples, despite smaller absolute profit figures. Khosla Ventures contributed roughly $50 million in 2019 and now holds a position worth approximately $1.5 billion — representing a 30x gain. Sound Ventures, the investment firm co-founded by actor Ashton Kutcher, deployed between $20–30 million and currently holds about $1.3 billion, achieving a 43x multiple. Thrive Capital invested $3.5 billion and maintains a 1.98% position currently valued at $16.9 billion.

Nvidia stands as the sole investor showing a paper loss. The company maintains 3.47% ownership in OpenAI, valued at $29.6 billion, compared to its $30.1 billion cost basis. Nvidia structured much of its investment through GPU computing credits instead of direct capital, which adds complexity to calculating actual returns.

    Altman’s Ownership Remains Undefined

Among the most noteworthy revelations in the documentation is that Sam Altman, who has served as OpenAI’s leader since 2019, possesses no ownership interest in the organization. His equity allocation appears as TBD in the records. OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor stated in October 2024 that precise equity allocations for Altman had yet to be determined. Altman personally refuted speculation about an imminent equity package during an internal company gathering.

The OpenAI Foundation, the originating nonprofit entity, retains 25.8% of the enterprise at zero acquisition cost — creating an infinite return calculation on an estimated $219.8 billion position. While representing a minority economic interest, the Foundation maintains exclusive authority over all board member selections.

OpenAI is preparing for a public market debut targeted for 2026 or early 2027 at a prospective $1 trillion valuation. Industry observers anticipate this liquidity event will clarify Altman’s equity arrangement.
