Huawei Technologies Group has formalized a strategic partnership with SHB, a prominent Vietnamese banking institution, representing the latest expansion of the Chinese technology firm’s influence within Vietnam’s rapidly evolving market.
SHB publicly disclosed the partnership details on Sunday. The agreement positions Huawei to assist the financial institution in crafting its technology infrastructure blueprint and constructing comprehensive data platforms. Additionally, Huawei will provide ongoing support to maintain system reliability and protect against security threats.
“The cooperation with SHB is an important milestone in the group’s market expansion in Vietnam,” said Spawn Fan, a senior Huawei executive, in the bank’s statement.
This partnership represents a continuation of Huawei’s Vietnam financial sector engagement. The technology company currently maintains active collaborations with SCB, SeABank, and Home Credit, delivering services across digital transformation initiatives, cybersecurity frameworks, data analytics capabilities, cloud infrastructure, and banking system optimization.
Expanding Regional Influence
The newly announced SHB partnership strengthens Huawei’s position within one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic economies. Vietnam’s financial services industry has accelerated its investment in digital capabilities, creating opportunities for technology providers like Huawei to establish significant partnerships.
Huawei’s expanding role in Vietnam represents a notable shift in the country’s approach. Hanoi previously maintained restrictions preventing Chinese firms from participating in 5G infrastructure development.
This policy underwent revision when Huawei secured multiple contracts for 5G network construction throughout Vietnam in the previous year. The SHB agreement demonstrates a similar pattern — strengthening relationships between Vietnamese organizations and Huawei spanning telecommunications and financial technology sectors.
Partnership Scope and Implementation
SHB ranks among Vietnam’s prominent private commercial banking institutions. The partnership with Huawei encompasses multiple critical areas: architectural design for technology systems, construction of data platforms, and continuous operational assistance to ensure stability and security.
These commitments carry substantial weight. Developing data platforms and technology architecture for commercial banking operations requires extensive integration with fundamental banking infrastructure.
According to the Vietnam Banks Association, Huawei’s activities within Vietnam’s financial landscape concentrate on digital transformation programs, security enhancement, data analytics implementation, cloud computing deployment, and banking operation refinement — domains that align closely with the SHB agreement parameters.
The 5G infrastructure contracts Huawei obtained in the previous year marked a significant policy adjustment from Hanoi. This regulatory change created pathways for expanded collaboration, with the SHB partnership serving as tangible evidence of this evolving relationship.
Spawn Fan, the Huawei executive featured in SHB’s announcement, characterized the agreement as a significant achievement — both for SHB and for Huawei’s comprehensive Vietnam market approach.
The Vietnam Banks Association has verified that Huawei’s current financial sector engagements include SCB, SeABank, and Home Credit, with the SHB partnership now joining this portfolio.
