Claude Receives Memory Capabilities and Chat Transfer Features During Massive User Growth
Anthropiс has introduced its memory functionality to all Claude users, coinciding with a significant increase in platform registrations following tensions with the United States government.
The memory capability, which enables Claude to retain information from previous interactions, had been restricted to paying subscribers until now. ChatGPT already provided this functionality to its free tier users.
Anthropic simultaneously introduced a chat history transfer tool. Users joining Claude can now migrate their conversation data from competing AI platforms including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot through a straightforward copy-paste procedure.
The migration process requires users to request their current AI assistant to export conversation data as a code block. This exported information gets pasted into Claude’s settings within the Memory section, followed by selecting “Add to memory.”
The transfer process can require up to 24 hours for completion. Users receive the ability to examine what information Claude has retained about them, with options to modify or delete any unwanted data.
ChatGPT has yet to introduce a comparable transfer tool for incoming users. Google has development underway for its own version, though a release date remains unannounced.
These feature additions arrive following discord between Anthropic and the Pentagon. The company declined to permit its technology for mass domestic surveillance operations or fully autonomous weapon systems.
President Trump issued directives requiring federal agencies to cease Claude usage. The Pentagon additionally designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk.
Claude Reaches Top App Store Position Following Government Controversy
The situation appears to have accelerated Claude adoption. The application reached the first position on Apple’s App Store among free applications, surpassing ChatGPT.
Claude’s free active user base has expanded beyond 60% since January. Daily registrations have increased fourfold during this timeframe.
The dramatic user influx resulted in service disruptions on Monday. Anthropic acknowledged several hours of downtime attributed to what the company described as “unprecedented demand.” Services were restored by midmorning in New York time.
Meanwhile, OpenAI revealed intentions to integrate its AI models into the Defense Department’s classified infrastructure. This announcement prompted boycott calls from certain ChatGPT users.
Understanding the Memory Transfer Process
Users begin by accessing Claude’s settings and locating the Capabilities menu. They then navigate to the Memory section and select “Start import.”
Following the insertion of the exported code block from an alternative chatbot, Claude initiates data processing. Users can verify imported information under “See what Claude learned about you.”
Anthropic verified the transfer feature functions with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The capability is currently accessible to all users.
