TLDR
- Micron has finalized the purchase of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 facility in Taiwan
- The chipmaker will develop an additional manufacturing plant at the Tongluo location
- The planned facility will match the size of its current Miaoli County operation
- Production at both sites will concentrate on advanced DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM)
- Development of the additional facility will commence before fiscal 2026 ends
Micron Technology ($MU) is expanding its Taiwan presence significantly. The American memory chip manufacturer revealed Monday that it will develop an additional manufacturing plant at its recently purchased Tongluo location, which the company acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC).
The semiconductor giant announced the completion of its acquisition of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 facility in Miaoli County. This transaction provides Micron with a strategic position that the company intends to strengthen by constructing a second manufacturing plant of comparable size next to the current one.
The additional facility targets increased production of advanced DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) — the memory types that drive AI accelerators and data center processors.
Development will kick off before the conclusion of fiscal 2026, which for Micron extends through late August.
Scaling Up HBM Production
HBM has emerged as one of the semiconductor industry’s most sought-after products. Chips from Nvidia and additional AI hardware manufacturers rely on this technology, and availability has remained constrained.
Micron ranks as the third leading manufacturer in the HBM market, following SK Hynix and Samsung. Growing manufacturing capabilities in Taiwan represents a strategic effort to narrow this competitive distance.
The Tongluo site establishes Micron’s second Taiwan manufacturing hub, complementing its current Taichung operations.
Operating dual facilities at a single location can lower infrastructure expenditures and accelerate production scaling, as utilities, distribution networks, and technical support are already established.
Strategic Value of the Tongluo Location
The PSMC transaction was initially revealed last year and has now reached completion. PSMC operated as a contract manufacturer, and its Tongluo P5 facility provides usable production space that Micron can adapt to its proprietary DRAM manufacturing processes.
Micron has kept the financial details of the completed transaction confidential.
The planned second facility at Tongluo will equal the first in size, though Micron has yet to release specific capacity numbers for either structure.
Taiwan hosts a significant share of global advanced semiconductor manufacturing, and Micron’s growth there positions the company nearer to critical suppliers within the regional chip production network.
MU stock was up 5.13% at the time of reporting.
