    Key Highlights

    • Meta will eliminate approximately 10% of its workforce (~8,000 employees) effective May 20, 2026
    • The workforce reduction aims to help finance Meta’s anticipated $135 billion AI infrastructure investment this year
    • An additional 6,000 vacant positions will remain unfilled
    • The company introduced an internal monitoring system that captures employee keystrokes and cursor activity for AI training purposes
    • META shares declined 2.31% in response to the news

Meta has revealed intentions to eliminate approximately 8,000 positions — representing roughly 10% of its total workforce — scheduled to become effective on May 20. The announcement triggered a 2.31% decline in META shares.

$META plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 8,000 jobs, and eliminate 6,000 open roles as it tries to offset heavy AI spending and run leaner, Bloomberg reports. The layoffs are set for May 20. pic.twitter.com/sgLVRxVpQC

The company positioned the decision as a strategic efficiency initiative, though the financial savings appear destined to flow directly into its ambitious AI infrastructure plans. Meta has committed to investing as much as $135 billion in AI-related infrastructure throughout 2026.

This reduction differs from earlier workforce adjustments, which typically involved simultaneous hiring in strategic areas. The current plan eliminates 6,000 unfilled positions entirely, indicating a more comprehensive restructuring effort.

Janelle Gale, Meta’s chief people officer, recognized in a company-wide communication that revealing the layoffs a full month ahead of individual notifications would create significant anxiety among staff. She explained the premature announcement became unavoidable following information leaks.

Workplace morale at Meta has experienced a dramatic downturn. Data from Blind, where verified employees share anonymous workplace feedback, shows over 80% of Meta-related commentary this year carries negative sentiment. That figure stood at approximately 20% throughout 2024.

Recent internal communications disclosed a new software system that monitors employee keyboard activity, cursor movements, and click patterns. Meta explains the collected data will train AI systems to perform fundamental computing operations. The monitoring applies universally to all employees, with no opt-out provisions available, including for personal email usage.

The disclosure circulated rapidly across social platforms and generated substantial criticism on Meta’s internal forums. A highly-rated response stated: “This makes me super uncomfortable. How do we opt out?”

    The Evolution Toward Compact Teams

Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s technology chief, distributed an internal analysis outlining two distinct operational models now functioning within the organization. One follows conventional practices — expansive teams, comprehensive documentation, systematic evaluations. The alternative model emphasizes small, agile groups leveraging AI capabilities.

“These teams are tiny. They move extremely quickly,” Bosworth explained. He characterized 2025 as feeling “like 100 years ago” considering the rapid transformation AI-powered workflows have undergone.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly emphasized AI’s capacity to reduce team size requirements. “We’re starting to see projects that used to require big teams now be accomplished by a single very talented person,” he stated in January.

The organization has already reorganized segments of its engineering division with dramatically flat hierarchies featuring 50-employee-to-one-manager ratios. Meta is simultaneously building what it describes as a “CEO agent” designed to assist Zuckerberg in accessing and analyzing information throughout the company.

    Investment Worries Remain

Investors previously responded favorably to Meta’s workforce reductions. The company’s elimination of 21,000 positions during late 2022 and early 2023 catalyzed substantial stock appreciation. The current market response has been considerably more subdued.

The primary apprehension centers on the likelihood that savings from workforce reductions will transfer directly to AI capital investments, which have already reached unprecedented levels. Meta’s projected AI expenditure of up to $135 billion for 2026 may face upward revision during upcoming earnings releases.

Meta Superintelligence Labs unveiled a new AI model recently. The company indicated the keystroke-monitoring system will enable that division to train its models on computing tasks including dropdown menu navigation and keyboard shortcut execution.
