Apple revealed the AirPods Max 2 on Monday, March 16, delivering the first significant update to its premium over-ear headphones since their debut in December 2020.
The second-generation model integrates Apple’s H2 chip, the same processor that powers both AirPods Pro and AirPods 4. This chipset enables multiple capabilities that were absent from the original version.
According to Apple, Active Noise Cancellation on the updated headphones performs up to 1.5x better than the previous generation. The enhancement comes through H2’s processing power combined with advanced computational audio algorithms.
The improved ANC specifically addresses common noise pollution from airplane cabins and public transportation systems. Transparency mode receives refinements to deliver more authentic ambient sound reproduction.
Regarding audio fidelity, Apple integrated a high dynamic range amplifier into the design. This component enhances sonic clarity while maintaining the signature sound characteristics established by the first-generation AirPods Max.
The second generation introduces support for 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback on AirPods Max. Users can access this capability through the bundled USB-C cable.
Premium Features Make Their AirPods Max Debut
Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation arrive on the Max platform for the first time. AirPods Pro users have enjoyed these capabilities since the second-generation model launched.
Live Translation relies on Apple Intelligence to enable real-time cross-language communication. Voice Isolation leverages H2’s computational audio processing to eliminate background noise during phone calls.
Conversation Awareness detects when users begin speaking to someone and automatically reduces media playback volume. Adaptive Audio dynamically balances ANC and Transparency modes according to environmental conditions.
Content creators receive two dedicated features. Studio-quality audio recording serves podcasters, journalists, and musicians who need professional-grade sound capture. Camera remote functionality allows users to control iPhone or iPad photo and video capture using the Digital Crown.
Gaming performance sees meaningful improvements with the new AirPods Max. Activating Game Mode on iOS, macOS, or iPadOS devices reduces audio latency for responsive gameplay.
Pricing, Color Options, and Release Timeline
AirPods Max 2 retail for $549 in the United States. This matches the launch price of the original model, maintaining the same price tier across generations.
Five color variants will be available: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
Pre-orders launch on March 25 through Apple’s online store and Apple Store app. Physical retail availability and customer deliveries commence in early April.
Apple highlighted environmental progress with the new model. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate 100% recycled rare earth elements across all magnets and 100% recycled polyester in the ear cushion materials.
Customers purchasing AirPods Max 2 receive a three-month complimentary Apple Music subscription if they’re new subscribers.
