hi, I've got a VIA Aopen AK72 , athlon 700, 256 RAM, 13 HD, Geforce 2MX Creative.
The chipset KX133 work fine, but the sound appear bad: cuts and accelerated. I use the soundcard incluided in the motherboar, VIA Sound AC97

i've got the same problem with the via ac97 (kt133a
chipset). the sound seems to be accelerated :(

my system boots with ms-dos, so i load the dos
drivers and made the sound chip sb pro compatible
(bios).

and to dissapoint you: it didn't work at all. even
when i add myself a jumpered device, there was no
sound. but: i had no real sb pro driver, so i
wasn't really able to test it out-

Hi I am also facing the same problem .I installed linux 7.1 in 3 machines of the same type card .all the Machines are giving the same problem .It did't give the correct output but a vague one .Any work around ?

Mine is bad too it stutters alot amost every 3and a bit seconds on high bitrate music it gets better on low bitrate.

My Problem is that I havent any sound at all!
I*ve got a KT133 chipset with onboard sound running windows xp and since i installed a new Graphic adapter (Geforce 2 mx 400) I have no sound!!!
I tried alot, Please help if you have any Idea!

I have the same problem. I was running Windows Me and reformatted and am now on a windows 2000 os. It refuses to believe I have a sound card. If anyone knows what to do please help us.

I have AMD 533MHZ with VIA Motherboard, I have the same problem and when the modem is in use it get worse.

i have a small problem..... in games or winamp the sound is great but if i'm trying to play a mouvie..... erroneus ...... it seems that the player said "there is no sound card instaled"

I guess we all (including me) have the same problem with the VIA AC97 onboard sound. It likes to stutter alot in some of my old DOS games - Like Wolf3d, Blake Stone, etc. (Yes, I still play these old games, sad but true). The only thing I can think of is to ask VIA themself, or download newer drivers.

Yeah- same problem here... using windows XP AC97 drivers I had working sound and music via the MS software synth output... I then downloaded VIA's ac97 drivers for winblows XP (because in some of my games the music was very dragged out and choppy) and now I have no sound at all anywhere.
I have tried all combinations of the bios regarding this- sb emulation no emulation mpu 401 enabled/disabled fm on and off... I think VIA just makes inept sound drivers for XP. we should send this list to VIA and see what they say.

That seems odd, because I've got a Via AC97 and my version of BeOS 5 plays fine. I only get sound when I boot BeOS before windows though. Windows 9x works with the chip just fine. The only problem in Be is that the pitch of the sound is wrong. SuSE Linux has bigger problems with it than Be, but that's another problem entirely.

I have a similar problem. i have a gigabyte G7XE and when i start up up the sound is choppy and in distorted. I have however, found a temporary fix for it. I you uninstall the drivers in device manager and then get windows to search for new hardware it seems to work fine until you reboot and have to repeat the process again which is quite annoying. I have all the latest drivers and still it doesn't work properly. Anyone got any ideas?

I have a brand new Soyo SY-K7VTA pro (uses KT133A chipset with 686B southbridg). Has apparently "so-called-integrated" AC97 sound. This was an upgrade from my poor old P233MMX which at least sounded good ;-)!

I have not heard ANYTHING from the computer - except for the BEEP at bootup and AudioCD playback (only every other boot-up though - very strange). Otherwise, new AMD-based machine is very fast.

I have been following a thread at the VIA Arena forum and apparently this problem has been around since September. Someone mentioned that a possible workaround is to remove the AC97 device (from Safe Mode) and also any VIAaudio.inf files from the windows directories, then reboot. When Windows tries to re-install drivers, direct it to use the older win9x flavors, which apparently have worked for some people.

I'm going to try this as my last resort this evening - else either the Mobo gets replaced or I get a PCI SB 128 or something!!

I've got the same problem under Win98 but found a solution for Linux. You just have to use the driver via82xxx and it works well.

First time experience that a device is working under Linux but not under win98

I used to have the same problem till I stuffed up the bios on my Gigabyte GA-6vm7A+ m/board which had Creative CT5880 o/board sound. I bought a Transcend TS-AVE3 m/board which has the AC97 sound on it and have not had any problems.

same here, have an 8kta2 w amd750 duron, i get sound in win98 fine,but no sound at all in dos mode..is this a glitch? or does via want everyone not to run dos? if it continues, im gonna get a REAL soundblaster card...

Don't feel bad; I have the same problem w/ an A-bit th7ii-Raid w/ onboard Via Ac97 running windows 2000 pro; the sound plays way too fast. If you do some searches you'll find the same problem all over. It doesn't seem to matter WHAT system, OS or drivers you are using. The fix? as Russell above says: "get a REAL soundblaster", & don't buy ANY VIA junk.

I use alton via motherboard - chip AMD 550MHZ - with trident cyberblade 8mb agp onboard, sound AC97 onboard and a modem pctel AMR. The sound is choppy, trembling, it's terrible. The problem most occurs when HD is used a lot, modem is used or the system hangs during activity. How could I get rid of this? BIOS? Desactivating some system devices? Desactivating some Problem solutions in System properties (control panel)? Some people said it's a problem regarding PCI Bridge, is it? No sound in DOS, too, EVEN WITH VIAUDIO.COM. Help me!

PS: I tried 68mu220, 68mu220a, 74mu130 and 74mu160a. I tried to change SDRAM latency to 3.0 instead of 2.0, as mentioned in BABOO FORUM (www.baboo.com)...The problem could me the AMR modem I will check that. (or better uncheck it hehe). HEY, Set latency to Zero program is available (but doesnat work either hehe).

Iīve the same Problem under Win 2000 and XP (no Problems with Win98 or Linux).
But Iīve a "real" Soundblaster.
AThlon 1400 + Asusboard with Via KT266.
I testet several BIOS settings and drivers but it didnīt work.

I have AC 97 audio on my FIC AZ11 MBoard, running 256 RAM and a Duron 700MHZ. I have had problems with choppy sound while surfing because my modem uses the same IRQ as the sound.
As for dos sound, you need to download an FM audio driver for old dos games and include it to load up in your autoexec.bat file.
At the moment I'm looking for that driver, when I find it I'll post another reply...

For thos of you who can't get sound in dos games with ac97 audio,
download the VIAFMTSR driver from this site:

and follow the instructions carefully.

Updating the Via 4in1 drivers before the sound drivers fixed the choppy sound for many machines i've worked on.

Yep, I have the same bloody problem with mine as well. I'm running a K7T Turbo 2 MB with an Athlon XP 1600 with a Geforce 2 Gts-Pro 32Mb video card, 512 Mb RAM and a 133Mhz Bus speed and in EA games especially the sound is screwed. Winamp seems to run fine as does the autorun functions of some programs audio, including those with stuffed up internal movie sound. In short I'm pretty pissed off about it cos what's the point of running a nice computer if you can't run nice sound? If anyone can tell us where to go to fix it, it'd be well appreciated.

I've installed XP to fix it and it's at least fixed the choppy sound I started with, but ingame movies still stutter.

By the way, I downloaded the most recent 4in1 drivers, and you guessed it- IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!!

Ok I have a different problem with my ac97 on a kt266, after reinstalling WindowsXP the sound is now very fuzzy and has poor output, its not choppy it doesn't not work. Its just fuzzy.

Any idea what I could do to fix it?

that's right, i've got an AMD too, a good sound but choppy on the Mic input only...
i tried 4in1 and VIA 8233 drivers but that fixed nothing with the microphone playback (accelerated and choppy)-

I just don't have music in old dos games(blake stone) that don't let me choose midi.
I shouldn't lose something because I bought a new computer last year. Remember, windows me doesn't use autoexec.bat

I have the same chipset and have a few comments:

1)First of it is NOT AMD.
2)Installing new drivers should, in most cases, work because this chipset is newer than the most versions of Windows.
3)Unfortunately for running old DOS games it is usually impossible without a true Sound Blaster because DOS games need DMA (DIrect Memory Access) which the PCI interface does not use, so basically DOS tries to access something that isn't there.

There is a program in the works that will emulate DOS sound called VDMsound at SourceForge.net and it DOES give me sound in DOS games...for about 2 seconds before it freezes, although that may just be my comp.

A Creative Sound Blaster card might fix the problem (even a PCI one) because many newer mobo's have what's called SB-Link implemented into its PCI slots which works with a Sound Blaster card to emulate DMA.

In Win9x i've read that you can edit your autoexec.bat file to get DOS support with a PCI card, but since i run NT i haven't messed with it myself.

I have a Soyo 7VCA2 w/ onboard AC97 audio. It sounds ok but not always. Sometimes audio fades or loses mid-band range. I can hear my voice thru the speakers when I put a mic but I cant record anything using the sound recorder. All I get is hiss. Also cant use voice-chat thru Yahoo Messenger.

Firstly, Intel use the AC97 on many of their boards with 845 and 815 chipsets, and a few of their other boards. This is NOT an AMD issue, as errors also occur with these chipsets on Intel boards and other boards with Intel (not VIA) chipsets.

The problem is usually driver related. On a couple of Windows XP installs I've done with these boards you'll have to force Windows XP to use the AC97 driver instead of Legacy, or some such. On other boards you'll have to make sure you've installed ALL OF THE MOTHERBOARD DRIVERS (such as the 4in1 for VIA chipset motherboards) BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOUND DRIVERS. This specifically includes the correct PCI bus drivers, etc.

In rare cases I've seen these chips be faulty. I've returned quite a few boards to MSI and Intel where the sound hasn't worked and replacing the board with an exact copy will allow the sound to be detected straight away.

Let me reiterate, though, that IT IS PROBABLY YOUR DRIVERS!

I have AMD athlon XP 1600+, Gigabyte GA-7vtxe motherboard with on board AC'97 audio. After installing windows XP Pro on my machine the system complains about a conflict and it restarts. This happens repeatedly. I could not do anything.
Let me know what to do to solve the problem?
