I'd recommend reading this webpage before deciding.

http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm

On it, there is information on which firewalls held up to testing and which failed. The one you are using now appears to be the best software firewall around.

If you want to continue using it, perhaps you can configure the settings and see if anything changes for the better.

Good luck.

The best software can sometimes cause the worst problems. ZA is definitely one of the best when it comes to protection but it is the WORST when it comes to uninstalling, for sure. You can read all about it on the web and even on here. It can wreak havoc on your machine even if unistalled the "right" way.

I personally would recommend Sygate or Kerio.

Good luck

I've been using Tiny Personal Firewall for over a year with no complaints. I don't know if they've improved the uninstall routine for ZoneAlarm since last year, but don't try uninstalling it without checking their website for exact instructions.

Their current uninstaller is considerably better than the one from 2.6. Back to the original problem - it sounds as if you have automatic internet locking enabled. Look at Automatic Lock under Program Control.

Within the ZA program, go to program control, then under the main tab make sure that your program is set at medium (learning mode) and the automatic internet lock is disabled...that should take care of the problem.

It is no problem uninstalling Zone Alarm, it messes up your system restore anyway, for free get Sygate it is great, before you uninstall Zone Alarm go to Their Web site and search for Uninstall, they have instructions, I did it and worked fine, I do know you need to uninstall by clicking zone alarm's uninstall option from the Start - Programs- zone alarm- uninstall tab, then reboot and do a search on your computer for it and also delete (please read their web site too) I did it and have had no problems since uninstalling it.

There are problems with ZA. 1000's of posts about this on the web. Sometimes even uninstalling properly it still has keys and files all over that can cause issues getting online etc. Happened to a friend of mine. I dloaded it and then uninstalled it with no problems but you need to do what is said exactly on there site. Those remaining true vector files can cause problems but other than that its a great program

Try going into the Program control/programs options. Give "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" access rights but not server rights. If that doesn't help set it back to how it was.

Make sure internet lock in not engaged as Richard S. suggested. A lot of people talk good about Sygate if you really want to install another.

Thanx everyone for your fast replies. My program control has been on medium and I turned off the automatic lock when this first happened, to no avail. Also I tried giving "generic host process for win 32 services" access rights but no server rights to no avail but thanx for the suggestion.Sounds like ZoneAlarm is a good firewall and as I have paid for it I will keep it for a little while longer in hopes that software companys catch up to XP or vice versus. Also I will go on their web page and ask them although I have asked a question before and it takes a long time for an answer.Thanx everyone.

I am a ZAP user with XP Home and have NEVER had a problem. So it is possible for it to work correctly.

My system restore works fine also.

Give generic host process server rights, too. I have been using ZA Pro on XP for the better part of a year, and for two years on 98 and ME before that. It is a good firewall. I have everything set to high and have no problems.
