Thanks, my card is probably the cause. I downloaded the latest driver from nVIDIA and when I ran it it said it found no device. I guess for now I'll limp along with the on board graphics. Which suck. I don't think at this point it's worth buying a new card. Time for a new laptop I guess. Thanks for the input. I had never seen this problem before and thought I'd throw it into the hat. Even when I tried safe mode I got 1's and zeros all over the screen. Weird?

remove the defective card so it doesn't cause a cascade short which will take out the rest of the system.
