When you set the bios to boot from the cdrom first and harddrive second to install the OS, did you change it to harddribe first and cdrom second aftr the OS was installed?

I was unable to get it to boot from the cd so I had to install it thru boot disks. Actually I installed 98 (with a floppy) but then couldn't find the prod key so I popped the xp cd in. At that point I didn't need a boot disk. But I did go back and switch it back to hd/floppy/cd.

Another question is why don't most older bios's let you boot from the cdrom, even if they have that option? I've gone thru that problem a hundred times.

If I'm not mistaken windowsreinstall only shows you how to install windows. The only section that lists troubleshooting costs $35 to use.

I think the problem was because I installed 98 first. After I updated the controller card driver with a 98 driver (instead of the xp driver) it booted up fine. But it still didn't see the correct size (a big problem that I didn't mention before).

The HD is a WD 160gb that comes with a controller card, once I took the controller card out and blew out the HD I was able to bootup using the cdrom. Weird. Anyone know why that would be?

You have to have the driver for the controller card installed before it will boot from it. Try putting your HD on an IDE controller and see if that helps.
