I have two HDs. I moved all the important files from C: to D: (they are physically two different drives, not partitions), I was running win98. Then formatted c: and installed XP and no i cant access the files on d:. it seems like it's empty..What to do???

Did you just move the files you wanted to keep to your D drive, or did you re-install 98 to that drive then copy your old 98 files you wanted to keep to that drive? If you just copied the files then that's your problem.

XP can access files in either NTFS or FAT32 so that is not your problem. Does XP recognise the D drive at all? There are file recovery programs available if your files still exist on the drive. Are you certain that you did not accidentally format D while you were doing the C drive? I nearly did this once.

Yes it recognizes the drive, not the label though. I'm quite sure I didn't format it accidentally.
Is it possible that XP setup has formated it or something....
is there anyway to access the files?

I misunderstood, I thought you had moved your entire 98 system, not just your documents etc. Yes, as Richard said it shouldn't be a problem for XP to access those files. First check to see that the drive is recognized by XP, if it is then check to be sure it wasn't formatted accidentally during your XP install. If the drive is recognized and you can't find the files then chances are the drive was formatted for some reason. Also, if it is recognized see what the file system is. If the XP install converted it from FAT to NTFS then you can be sure you've lost the files.
