Howdy, I have found the boot from CD and format/install combo to work just fine.
I suppose it depends on your XP version. Mine will boot and format just nicely :)

Make sure you can boot from cd, insert it and install. You don't have to format before. You have that option when clean installing xp and it works perfectly. Good luck.

Installing XP is a little different than 98 or Me. All the partitioning and formatting is best handled by the XP cd. This site has a beautiful demonstration: http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxpinstl.htm Really though, you can insert the cd while your old Windows is running and start the install from there. here is a site that describes how to install XP from DOS: http://lobarpg.tripod.com/Home/winxpindos.html If you have already gotten rid of your old Windows system, this should work, but downloading the 6 install floppies from Microsoft might be easier. Once you get the XP cd install program running, it has all the info you need for deleting old partitions and creating and formatting new ones.
