XP-can't install or download

I just bought this comp(used) with XP already in it,I don't know vey much of it I'm used to Win Me, seems I can't install anything,ex: my printer -won't accept, I tried installing some programs it won't let me, I have tried downloading it won't let me the only thing I was able to get was the new Beta version for MSN hotmail. I tried to put in a anti-virus it wouldn't let me. I don't know what to do,it has all this other stuff on here I don't need or want I can't remove it.ex: all the themes,pictures that comes with it I"m at a loss with this XP any help I would welcome please, Thank-you,Denise

Not exactly sure what you are installing but xp has a program compatibility feature if you are installing programs that run on windows 98 or me or others. You might try it. Click on start, programs, accessories, program compatibility wizard and try that when installing a program. Actually if you have the restore disk or a legal copy of windows to put on it, it would probably be better to start with a fresh clean install of windows and do away with everything thats on it now and start from scratch. But if you are used to doing it you would be better off finding a friend that knows how to format and start anew.

Hi Denise,
Sounds perhaps you are not logged on as the administrator. If as you say, you aren't able to install anything then try logging off and back on as the administrator and see if that changes things. Hopefully there aren't any passwords that will inhibit you from logging back on. If this is the case then perhaps you will need to start with a clean install. Good luck.
