I have been running windows xp home for a few months now and it seemed fairly stable until yesterday when it wouldn’t start. I restored to a previous restore point then restored back to the day before yesterday (because I discovered things were missing on a very early restore date) , anyway everything seems OK now but of course I want to know what happened, is there some kind of log somewhere – in windows xp that may be able to indicate what happened to my system? (service pack 2, firewall & antivirus)

Right click "My Computer" and choose manage. Try the system log under event viewer and see if there's anything in there to give you a clue.

thanks winkles and kinel! Kinel, I have recently upgraded to XP (my system description is wrong), the system 'hangs' during the windows XP log (scanning logo) after POST, and it just stays 'scanning' but doesn't progress any further - only way out = hard reboot??
