XP won't update

I had to do an XP repair which got rid of all my updates but left all my settings and programs intact which is what I wanted. But I am only able to install the windows 3.1 intaller update and one other. Then the other updates show to download but then it say's it can't install them. Why?? I read somewhere that I don't have priviliges but I do.
