Help!!! How do I get XP to not only shut down but also turn the computer off? 98 did it but when i installed XP it shuts down but I have to manually turn it off after the shutdown process is done.

Hello Laura I experienced the same problem when I installed XP. The problem On my system was solved when I uninstalled the CD burning software Easy CD Creator. Creator itself is not the problem but DirectCD that comes with it is a problem. If you have this program try uninstalling it and I think that might solve your problem. Also at the end of this month Roxio is going to have a patch which should solve the directCD problem, but until then try the unistall I think you will be happy to see your machine shut down. Good luck and best wishes.
Sincerely Tim

I have the same problem, not a big problem, just a very minor annoyance. I can deal with it, but if someone has a solution, it'd be great.

Have the same problem! I have a burner but using Nero software.
I have a pII 400 and i'm sure the problem is there.

I have the exact same problem it is so annyoing cause i leave my room thinking that my comp will turn off but i come back hours later and its on that screen "It is now safe to turn off your computer"
it is so annyoing i might go back to winme

AAAAHHHHHHH, the tragedies of a bootlegged XP program, its not out yet fella's wait a month or so for updates. and if you think you have problems, the only thing my comp does is reboot, i cant even shut down.

I have the same problem and wouldn't shut down before i installed Easy CD Creator. Looks like no-one knows the answer to this one.

I had the same problem with XP PRO and I fixed it. It is a problem with the power managment in System properties. I can't remember excactly where about but it needs enabling.

Add had the same proplem,
After chinging some settings in the power management and rebooting, the system power down works.

hi - i have the solution
it has nothing to do with cd burning software
go to control panel
then performance and maintenance
then power options
and finally click on APM and enable it
it will work!!

You should also check BIOS settings on APM. Did somebody work on WIN2000 before? You will note that no matter the APM, shutdown will behave the same.Log off and not cut the power.XP is the new ver of NT,right?Right!!

I had the shut down problem on my Compaq 1600XL-144 laptop, but fond that the USB device, a card smart card scanner, caused the shutdown halt. So i have to pull out the USB-plug to have a proper shutdown. Earlier i did not see it with Win98,ME or Win2000.
