Question for ya guys. I recently bought a new hard drive, physically installed it, formatted it. And was ready to install win xp (burnt copy). After numerous tries of the computer freezing upon installing, it finally installed. But it requires the winxp cd everytime to start. Even when I don't press enter to boot from cd, it does. If i take the disc out, it won't start it says" error without startup disc" or something like that. Well, i unplugged the power cord, and the thick white one (ata?) cord from the new drive, and put it back in my old one. Now my old drive requires the disk to be in. WTF? I guess it doesn't affect anything in terms of it starting up. But I'd prefer not starting the computer everytime with the disc in. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I tried changing the boot sequence in the bios. first it was set at hdd0,floppy, Ls120. then I switched all 3 sequences to HDD0, and it still asked for it. Then HDD1, and it did the same thing :(

I mean it works fine, i just don't want to have it in the cd rom everytime i start my computer! Especially with my old drive that never needed it prior to me messing with the new drive!

When you are installing xp you should not have as you stated numerous freezes upon installing and then it finally installed.

That tells me that you did not get a clean install to begin with.

I would start all over again do a clean format.

Set you boot device as follows

1st should be cdrom

2nd should be ide 0
third floppy

Boot with disc in and let xp reformat and replace that bad install.

If the same exact thing happens again then your copy is defective or your cdrom is not reading correctly. More than likely the copied xp is bad.

turbocamaro I've got the same prob but i have a genuine version which was working as normal and then i found it would only boot from the hard drive if it had the xp cd in but did not use it to boot!!without the cd it says invalid system disk!!. It's not the boot config,I was thinking it might be the Master boot record on the hard drive but i can't find a fix and fixmbr in recovery concole had no effect. If you find a fix please e-mail me and vise virsa.
