Can't you run the last known config? Press F8 when the system is going through POST and you should get your startup menu. From there choose last known good config and see if it gets ya back in.

Sound similar to the Unmountable Boot Volume scenario (although may not be the same error message) If you try the last know config and that doesnt work then you can always try a repair: boot off the winxp cd then wait till it goes through all its setup things then go into command console mode and type "chkdsk /r". May work....worth a shot.

I had that happen several times...it turned out to be that I had installed a new 40GB hard disk (maxtor) and I didn't use the software it came with to set it up...it seemed that this drive would not work with XP in NTSF mode at all(temporarily then it would freeze and crash permanately...not even restore to last know good boot) and only works in FAT32 when you use the software that it came with...after I did a clean install with Maxtor's software and then loaded in XP with FAT32 file structure did it work smoothly...
Hope this helped

I had problem with brand new Athlon XP 1600+ PC reinstalled with Windows XP home edition. I had done a disk defrag (in safe mode) which completed successfully but when I restarted, it refused to reboot and went straight to the BIOS setup screen (the hard disk light was on full and I thought the hard disk was toast!). Could not even boot from the WinXP CD. Eventually, I removed the CMOS battery on the motherboard for about an hour, put it back and the PC rebooted OK. (I had to reset the date/time in the BIOS setup). The hard disk was fine. (WINXP still freezes at least every day, but that's another issue). Hope this is useful...

aam, aam... T, what HD has with NTFS? HD doesnt care what type of format do u use! u can format it to your own format - it will work perfectly! and maxtor software needs only if u want use it in Dos and u dont have Windows. probably your whole system is screwed up that why u cant use NTFS, or maybe your WinXP CD is damaged.
san, I think only 5.5.6.4 is working ok with XP...
but anyway, with my own experience MAXTOR - sux! I had to buy 2 Western Digital HDs after I figure out, that my 'Unmountable Boot Volume' couse of Maxtor HD.
another thing what had happend to me that I had ASUS A7V and A7V133 mobo with VIA chipset, that has ATA100 onboard controller. that's sounds great, but VIA had confirm, that their chipset has a bug, that cousing some problem with SoundBlaster sound card and ATA100 controller. and if u trying copy one big file (700 meg) then system can freeze. several times I got 'Unmountable Boot Volume' after reboot.
now I'm on Intel chipset and have not a single problem! (knock, knock, knock on woodden table)

Once I was at work, and somebody tried
to install the Roxio 5.0. Just after that, XP
crashed. I tried to boot in safe mode,
wiithout sucess. B/c i wanted all the info
in ther, i mounted the HD in another PC
and made a backup of my documents
with that machine's OS (the backup tool).
The next step, format x: (x: is the HD taht
doesn't boot), and I had to reinstall XP. I
installed the roxio again, and it crashed
XP. TIP: If u start the next time your PC crashed with the last good known configuration , it will boot... if you try to restart normally, your machine will be broken and you'll have to reinstall everything.
Note: I have a 40 Gb 7200 rpm Maxtor HD and it works excellent.

If you two hard-disks, I have a solution. On IDE-0 you have your main XP installation. With most modern BIOS you can choose which IDE will boot first. So therefore you can start an instaklation on IDE-1 aswell. Suppose IDE-0 is producing the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Switch your BIOS to boot from IDE-1 and start to install XP as usual. Once the system has copied the necessairy files to the Hard-disk it will reboot the system. Now, however, the installation will detect something is wrong with IDE-0 and will repair the problem before it continues. You can then switch the BIOS back to boot from IDE-0 which will now work. This solution means that depending on the size of your drives, your system will be up and running again within 5 minutes. I have a Maxtor 80gb and an IBM 40gb, I have had to re-install my PC at least 15 times in the past 6 months. I no longer have this problem thanks to this solution. I hope it helps.

This will definitely work(chkdsk /r).I work in Dell Tech support and we have had numerous calls with this error. This has worked in all the cases so far.So without any fear you can go ahead and try this.
Last known good does not work in 99% cases.
I hope this helps.

i work for gateway technical support and this is an issue with xp
microsoft just released the cause of this error message.
it has something to do with the ide cable coming off of the hard drive
it doesnt happen with any specific hard drive because i have seen it on western digitals, quantom fireballs and ibms.
the resolution for this issue is to run chkdsk /r and if that does not work then write zeros to the hard drive using western digitals utility called gwscan
you can get this file off of the gateway website by searching for the keyword gwscan
after writing zeros you can partition using either NTFS or FAT32
then you should replace your ide cable so it does not happen again

You tech's should be ashamed of yourself. "Don't use NTFS, use FAT32 it's more stable as a solution" are you wacked? Here's the goods from Microsoft's website. What is not mentioned in this article is that this can also be caused by an improper shutdown on an XP box. When the hard drive cache does not clear and then the unit boots the cache does not have the same contents as the file and therefore you receive this message. http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q297185

Well, I'm the father, of BOTH GAUTAM and ASHISH . They are actually both fooling. I've made sure they won't be misguiding anyone anymore. Well coming to UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME, it happens when the partition information on the Hard Drive is corrupted.Best thing to do is DEBUG , FDISK and use NTFS partition to install WIN XP again. This will ensure, security, in multiple user mode as well is known to prevent such problems.

You may want to consider this...:

I tried all the above mentioned methds with zero success.... I think it's worth it for you to try them as well.

Bott from XP CD, screw the Recovery Console.... Begin install, and when it detects you existing install (even on OEM CD) choose to repair that install. Sound too simple, I know, but you can do this, just like you could with 98, and it very often saves a lot of time, and stress.....

techs of the world unite. i work for HP.i've seen a lot of this, couple time i got to watch it happen. it starts with missing files. c_12707.nls, restart and it changes to ntldr, restart again and its unmountable boot volume. we haven't tried chkdisk 'cause we don't have dos capability without a startup disk, but thanks for the tip. has anybody concidered the possibility that the BIOS is losing its large HDD support?? or possibly the OS itself. if you configure the HDD without it you lose the outer tracks, including the boot sector. by this point of the boot process, the OS has taken over and knows what its looking for butcan't get it 'cause the outside of the platter is not acessable. what is acessable are the inner track, but no boot sector.
