I have a problem that seems very difficult to fix. I woke up today to find that XP won't start and keeps re-booting before it gets to the logon screen. I've read many things on these forums about how to fix this, but nothing seems to work. I've tried to use the setup from the XP CD, but nothing happens. I've gone into BIOS and changed the initial device to CD instead of floppy. I've also made an XP boot disk; doesn't work. I am constantly given the screen where I can choose from the following options:

boot to safe mode (starts to load files and freezes halfway through)

boot to safe mode w/networking (see above)

boot to safe mode command prompt (same as the above two)

last known good configuration (freezes at the logon screen)

start windows normally (goes to the logon screen and after about 10-15 seconds the computer will re-boot again)

I'm really at a loss. I'm assuming it's a virus but how can I get into the system to delete it? If I need to re-install the kernel32 file, how can I get to a simple command prompt?

Please help :(

On the boot screen to boot from the XP cd you have 5 seconds to hit enter. Then you can do the repair.

Try using a w95 or 98 boot disk .

You have to go to the bios and select boot from the cd drive before the IDE 0. Then it will see the cd before the HD and you have 5 seconds to hit enter.

per: actually I've already done what you said and I still have the same problem..

Johnw: I went to the links you posted but it appears they are of no use to me until I can get the XP setup working; that's the biggest problem. I just keep getting the startup options screen (start in safe, last know good config, normally, etc.)

I'll try doing it with a 95/98 boot disk...

Possibly your cd drive is not being recognized or is gone.

damn, this problem just won't go away...

The CD drive and floppy drive both work fine, as I downloaded the WinXP setup boot disks 1-6 and I was able to go into setup and run recovery. I then followed the instructions exactly from the link that JohnW posted. I expanded the kernel32 file and everything seemed to work exactly as the support page said it would. I then re-started the computer like it said, and baboom, same problem.

I'm really starting to believe this is a virus..is there any way I can check for viruses from DOS?

oh btw, when I try to run in safe mode it starts unpacking the files and then stops here with this message:

"Press ESC to cancel loading d346bus.sys.."

the last file that appears loaded is Mup.sys

It hangs here forever..

Well, something is going on... Exact same problem here:

[xp 109400] d346bus.sys startup problem

Daemon Tools version 346 is supposed to be very stable, and I'm not convinced this driver is the problem. Seems like something fishy is going on - a virus is still a possibility...

I think it is something wrong with the d346bus.sys file or the d346prt.sys file located in your DRIVERS folder. These files are supposed to be the drivers that allow Daemon Tools to add a virtual drive to your computer configuration. I am trying to manually uninstall it right now to see if I can get rid of the problem. I need to know all the registry changes that Daemon Tools makes and all the files it adds. So far, the support for Daemon Tools hasn't replied. Hopefully I'll figure out something with svg and I'll post back here. If anything though, I know a clean install will solve your problem, though I know that that would be a last priority.

If you don't mind loosing your files and you have a Windows XP upgrade CD, not full, just boot from a floppy and access the I386 folder on the CD and run WINNT which should bring you to the installation screen. Microsoft does not support this, but it works and that's how I've been doing it ever since.

Some German forum site linked the problem with Daemon Tools to the new XP ServicePack2. If both you and 'RiceHoshi' in the other thread have installed XP SP2, then I'd say that's the cause of the problem.

Did you install XP Service Pack 2?

well, I had the whole weekend to try some things out and I've come to the conclusion that it is either a virus or a hardware problem. I've deleted the d346 file, I've deleted mup.sys, and I've deleted amdagp.sys (all of these were backed up). All of these files have apparently been problems for other users in different forums but none of them were the solution for me.

I then was able to use the Windows XP setup boot disks to do a repair of Windows and everything seemed to be working fine until the install just hanged at 37 minutes. When I re-booted, I got a blue screen error quoting me a specific message (which I don't know now as I am at work). I then found a link to this specific message and apparently if you get this message you most likely either have a virus or a hardware problem.

My computer is only 2 months old and has worked great until now so all of my bets are on the blaster virus. I'm going to bring my HD into work and see if I can run a virus check on it from this computer.

anyways, when I get home I'll post a link to the specific error page I mentioned.

I had the same problem and discovered today, while goofing around, that if I went into the BIOS at startup and enabled ONLY the primary hard drive (thus disabling the secondary drive i.e. cd-rom) then i can boot ok. But of course, then I can't use the cd rom drive since it is not recognized. Perhaps its a big clue though. I also don't have a virus checker.

My computer at work doesn't have a S-ATA slot in it so I wasn't able to hook up the HD to it. If I hooked up my work comp's IDE HD to my computer at home would I then be able to go into Windows from the IDE HD and run a virus check on the S-ATA drive?

If you're planning to boot from your work-HDD on your homesystem, then there will probably be problems with the work-XP not recognizing the hardware. The work-XP could then either install a whole load of new drivers for your hardware, which might later cause even more problems when you put it back in the work-hardware.

Or XP could simply object to the major changes in hardware by not loading at all and maybe showing activation errors.

Either way, I would recommend backing up all data from the work-HDD first, and assume that you will need to install XP fresh on both drives afterwards.

There are free Anti-Virus programs out there, that work from a floppy. Maybe try those first. Here are a few that I know of:
F-Prot Anti-Virus (F-prot)
Stinger Anti-Virus (McAfee)
nod32 Anti-Virus (Eset)
norman Anti-Virus BootDisk (NORMAN)

Try starting them from the recovery console if booting from the floppy doesn't work.

thanks for the info :)

I downloaded F-Prot Anti-Virus for DOS but the file is 2 MB and my floppy only holds just over 1 MB. maybe a stupid question, but are there floppy disks that are 2 MB or can I somehow fit this file on my 1 MB floppy disk?

I think I made a mistake about those DOS versions. Sorry about that.

But I do think there's an AV around that can boot & scan from a floppy, but I don't find the link for it. Maybe ask in the Security & Virus forum for the best tools, and whether running a scan from the Recovery Console is possible.

How did you get on?

Mine wouldn't start in any mode either but
I could get to the repair console using the
xp cd but I don't know what to do from
there. My problem seems to be a corrupt
krnl file which I should replace. Apparently
there is a particular krnl file wich is
crucial to the operating system and it just
won't load in any circumstance without it.

I have the same problem! Did anyone find the cause? Is it due to a virus or worm? And a solution? I want to save data if it is possible.
