Everytime i select "shut down" the computer just restarts,if i select restart it will restart,i have tryed fixing the power setings but it didn't help, have u any ideas?

Gut feeling is that your machine is blue-screening at shutdown. Turn off the "Automatically Restart" feature in Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery (Settings)--now you'll be able to see the error message rather than restarting.

I tryed what u both said but i did everything it told me to on the web site and it still isn't working,i tryed turning off the automatic restart but the error message says it could be a program that i am running in the background but none are running. thanx anyway.

Sounds like some Power management file is messed up. You may want to try re-installing Win XP, chose the upgrade option. Your personal files will be saved.

Hi.
If none of the above worked, try this.
1. Click start then run.
2. Type regedit and hit return.
Regedit window will open.
3. Click on Hkey_Local_machine then software then microsoft then windows nt then current version then winlogon. So what you have done so far should look like this.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
4. Look in the right window, near the bottom for PowerDownAfterShutDown, You might only be able to see upto PowerDownAfter... If the value to the right of that is 0(zero). Continue.
5. Double click on it and change it to 1.
Close regedit and shutdown, hopefully your problem should be solved.

I found this at: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Don't know if it will help or not, but it sounds like your problem.
"Speaking of the BIOS, it's probably a good idea to ensure that you have the latest version before installing XP. This is because XP, like 2000, more strictly follows the ACPI power management specification than Windows 9x/Me, and older BIOSes might make the OS behave strangely (for example, you choose Shut Down and the system reboots instead). Generally, you can download BIOS upgrades from the Web site of the company that made your PC or motherboard."

Hi Andy,
