This is driving me crazy! When I set my computer to scan disk on reboot i get 1 of 2 messages: windows has finished disk scan no errors (it hasn't done ANYTHING!) or cannot do it , needs total volume access then proceeds to login window (it boots up again no probs at least). How can i fix this. Thanks to anyone who can help. fungifu

Is Norton AV configured to scan everything from bootup to Windows?

Yes it is, in fact after login it's set to start a scan disk with fix errors but it can't so asks if I'd like to on reboot. I always say yes.........it used to work %50 of the time but now I also setup a scan through My Computer/tools etc. I guess i figure the odds are better that way.But no luck in 10 or more reboots.

The AV is stopping scandisk from doing its job. That's why scandisk requires total volume access. Go to AV configuration to turn it off. After scanbdisk is done, turn it back on. While scandisk is running, take a break, watch TV maybe.

Well XPUser, i totally disabilied Norton AV in Run/msconfig but still no luck. Any other ideas? You're right though, it must be something in the bootup process all it says now is 'cannot access volume'.

I had the same problem, but I wasn't running Norton or Zonealarm. What I did was set the computer to scan the disk on reboot then kill all processes with the task manager. Kill everything including explorer.exe. Then reboot and it should work. I have no idea why this worked, it could just be my system.

I had same problem and disabling NAV didn't work.
The problem was ZA, just stop it temp from loading with Windows or temp uninstall.
