I recently ugraded from 98 to XP. I have an hp cd-writer 9500 series that I used to back up data before the upgrade. XP doesn't seem to be able to read these CD's. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

What third party software did you use to backup your data before you upgraded the OS?

What is happening? Is the drive you are using working fine with other disks? Did you use Direct CD or Drag to Disk?

1. I used HP CD Writer 9500i/9700i/9900i Installation Disc. It says it's for 95/98/2000/ME ... could I use it for XP as well?

2. The drive is working for other disks, just not the ones I created with 98. Nothing is happening ... it's not reading anything on the disks. I dragged & dropped.

I'm not familiar with that software so I couldn't say, but usually anything that works with 2000 will work with XP. Must be a proprietory format of some sort.

I took a chance and installed the software ... BIG MISTAKE!!! I kept getting a popup from XP telling me it was disabling drivers that were imcompatible. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and uninstalling again. No luck. Repair didn't work for this particular problem so I had to do another clean install. I learned my lesson. I will never, never, ever again install software that doesn't have a big, fat XP on it. Even if others tell me that if it works for Win 2000 it may work for XP. NOT! LOL! ;)

I'm posting this as a warning to others. Only install software that is labeled XP compatible. Seriously!

Sorry to hear of the problem with the software. Unfortunately this must not have been the case this time. I really don't understand that though. I would GUESS that this is due to something about HP, and thier software.

I have no idea, OtheHill, but I've ordered a CD from HP with updated drivers for XP. It didn't cost much, and I'm hoping it will fix everything and I'll be able to use my cd-rewriter programs again. Thanks for responding! :)
