XP Won't Quit Asking Me to Activate

Hello.

I am trying to upgrade an individual's computer from Win9X to WinXP. I have done a fresh install of XP (reformat, repartition, the whole bit).

Every time I start the computer, it asks me to activate XP, so I do, everything goes perfect... takes me right to the "Thank you" screen that you guys have all seen. Then, it gives me a message saying that the machine hasn't been activated right away afterward.

Any idea whats going on?

The only other issue that is going on with the machine is that I am getting a 2f8 error on startup that I bypass by pressing F1. Nothing seems to be wrong with the keyboard. Does this error have anything to do with the activation problem?

HELP!

I'd rather not do anything illegal/microsoft doesn't want me to do.
