This is really, really starting to tick me off with XP. What happens is, I download a lot from the 'net, and sometimes my downloads don't finish, or I change my mind, etc. What happens is I stop the download or it stops, and I'm left with a useless file. Sometimes 100 to 200 to even 500mbs worth of a file that isn't complete, and so none of the video players will play the file because it's uncomplete. Now, with XP, the AVI file IMMEDIATELY gets attached to a video player or some other nonsense, which means I CAN'T DELETE IT without first playing the file, but I CAN'T PLAY THE FILE when it's incomplete! I've figured out that I can usually fix the avi file with "fixavi" app, open the uncomplete file, close it, and NOW the AVI file has been UNattach from the player, which means I can delete it. The only problem is, this is a pain in the buttocks. Can anyone let me know how I can KEEP XP from associating my AVI files immediately after I download? IT would really help, because this is starting to really get on my nerves bad.
Thanks, guys.

You can delete the file through the media player or download another player and make it the default player, thus eliminating the problem.

right click on it and select properties. This will show you where its located on your harddrive. Now select delete from library. Then go where its located on the HD and delete it from there.

You don't have to wipe unfinished avi files. if wanna watch them use DIVX Fix (Repairs Unfinished AVI FIles to Watch)Didn't find yours email address to sendit over

If you don't want anything on your computer to associate itself with .avi files, you need to open up My Computer.... Tools.... folder options.... file types tab, and change what you have to open .avi files so that nothing opens them. This way every time you try and open an .avi file, you'll need to specify the program. Should fix your problem.

I faced this problem. Found a very simple solution. Delete the folder which contains such file. Will go absolutely smooth.
Do take care to remove other files from folder which you don't want to be deleted.

What I found to be the problem is the registry entries that Media Player makes. What you need to do is delete the keys at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\RecentFileList
and(if it exists) at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\RecentURLList
now you should be able to delete those files(provided you have the administrative rights)
this also has the added benefit of keeping snoops from seeing what you have been watching...

OK this works great but i dont know enough about the registry to create an entry to stop WMP from making a registry entry for the avi files.

This should keep it from keeping the record.
navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorercreate a new DWord value called "NoRecentDocsHistory" without the ""
then double-click it and set it to 1Then you might need to reboot for the changes to take effect.

I fought and fought the problem of not being able to delete avi, wmv, mpg, mpeg, asf files for a long time and finally found a work-around that has worked every time. . .though it is not pretty. Here it is:
Close all open apps. open a command prompt and navigate to the directory with the offending files. now, open the Task Manager and click on the Processes tab. select "explorer.exe" under Image Name. Click "End Process". No you will only have the command prompt and the task manager. In the Command Prompt, DEL the offending files (DEL *.mpg, DEL mus*.avi, DEL test.wmv, etc.) The files should now delete without a problem. Now go back to the task manager and click on the Applications tab. Click the "New Task..." button. in the dialog, type explorer.exe and click OK. Explorer will start back up and everything will be fine.
Hope this helps.

Nothing at this site has worked for me yet as far as deleting AVI files
I found this answer that worked for all avi file delete problems at: http://wxperience.com
Delete unfinished avifiles
Thanx to: Johan
Unfinished download of avi files (divx) can be a trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it\'s possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.
