OS: windows me
CPU/Ram: 1 gig athlon 500 mb ram
Comment:

I can run Me or win98 without any problem but when I try to install any version of xp I get files that won't install and after the installation is complete xp hangs up and won't open many folders. I built this computer about four years ago and according to Microsoft xp is suppose to work on it. I have a Tyan Trinity s2390B KT-A motherboard with a Via KT-133A Ver 2.0 slot chipset. I have updated my bios to the latest version available and have installed the latest chipset drivers from Via Arena.
Can anyone help me?

Hello Walter,

Make sure the computer is "compatible" with the system requirements for Windows XP.

How old is your PC (or laptop/desktop)?
Does it match the system requirements for Windows XP (OR XP Pro)?

You See, all OS's have different system requirements and this could be the main (or could be the only) reason why this is happening.

If everything ABOVE ^^^ checks out, then do a clean install by doing fdisk /mbr, then reformatting your hdd (creating partitions and then reformatting your HDD) and then try to install WIN XP.

This might do it.

Hope this helps.

When you say won't install, do you mean when it's copying them over to your hard drive? I had that problem and used a different cd-rom drive and that worked. The cd-rom drive would work for everything but that.

I have also had cd roms that would install any program, but not install XP. And an older hard drive that can easily install 98 or me, often times cannot instyall XP because the rigors of XP are too much for it...and realize the drive isn't lonmg for the world either if it won't.

Try removing all devices except 1 stick of ram and the video card. If that doesn't work swap the ram. If that doesn't work swap video cards. Then add the units back in one at a time with a reboot and find the offending hardware.
