Well, here I am again!!! I found my way back. I posted this problem in December and THE PROBLEMS IS STILL the same!! I am not using any file sharing programs and these are files and folders I create or store on my second drive. BUT this also happens when I create folders or files on the desktop so it is a C"\ drive issue also. It is VERY maddening. I have to reboot to be able to delete them. It is NOT a fun thing. You should not have to do that. I have waited HOURS and tried to delete a file again when there is NOTHING ELSE OPENED and STILL it is not resolved! This is a bug of XP I am sure! It makes me want to go back to 98! But I will NOT. ANY NEW IDEAS????? This has gone on long enough!!! Thanks.

Could be a virus. Also, sometimes with movies and pictures it says they are in use when it's displaying a thumbnail (at least for me it does sometimes, I don't know why). That's all the help I can provide.

No virus...I keep that updated and run it often. This has been going on for MONTHS! ANd it does not matter what kind of file it is. Sometimes it is a folder. I empty the contents and then want to delete it and NO DICE. It is really so frustrating! Thanks anyway... :)

I suppose you've already tried going into Safe Mode, logging on as Administrator and deleting them from there?

I think I tried the Safe Mode thing a long time ago but I do not remember for sure. The trouble is when you are moving and renaming and organizing files you do not want to have to shut down and boot into safe mode every time. I have read the q308418-419 but the drive I am using is Fat 32 so it does not apply. The C:\ drive is NTFS and the second drive which I use for archiving and organizing is FAT 32. They are both 40 gigs in size but I do not see why that would mean anything. I NEVER had this trouble in Windows 98/98SE but I do not want to go back to bsod's! There HAS TO BE AN ANSWER! I have seen where others have had this trouble so I would think MS would do something! Oh...WHAT am I thinking!?

Instead of rebooting launch the task manager (hit ctrl+shift+esc) and end process on explorer under the processes tab. Then click File>new task and type explorer and hit enter. This is kind of like restarting but it only takes a few seconds before windows is running again. Try to delete the file and see if this helped.

Thank you! That did work! But isn't it supposed to work without having to do that? And WHAT would cause this? But I can tell you...this works better than anything I have done to date and this has been MONTHS that I have fought with this! Thank you again.
If any one knows WHY this is happening and what I can do to FIX it please holler!
:-)

I'm glad I could help you out Anna. My guess as to why this is happens is that windows (explorer.exe) for one reason or another still thinks that the file is in use. Restarting explorer.exe releases the file so you can delete it. This can also happen in windows 2000.

I've had this happen on two different installations of windows, One WinXp and one Win2K. After reinstalling windows both times the problem didn't happen again. So unfortunately the only fix that I know of is reinstalling windows, but if this happens too often it might not me a bad idea.
