I recently build a computer:
Athlon xp 2600+
512MB Ram
80GB HD
ATI Radeon 7000
PC Chips M848A Motherboard

Well first off the power supply in the case was bad, but now that I have a replacement, I tried firing the computer up. It worked fine and got about halfway through the Windows XP install and then froze. I tried the install again and got it to complete the install, but now it just starts to log into the windows desktop and then freezes. I have checked the Cmos settings and loaded a fail-safe default, but the computer will still not boot completely. I checked the temperature, and it was running at about 42 degrees after the install. The computer will boot into safemode. It is a freshly formatted installation of XP so I haven't had a chance to install any drivers besides what XP does durring setup. Any ideas on why it won't boot? Thanks.

Remove the display adapter from device manager in safemode and reboot the PC or go into msconfig in safemode under BOOT.INI choose /SAFEBOOT(MINIMAL) save the changes and reboot again see if you get into windows in normal mode.

BTW does it actually say safemode in all four corners or it just looks like safemode?.

Have you installed the via 4in1 chipset drivers if your chipset is from via.

If not do it in safe mode.

I tried removing the Radeon from the device manager, and I can now actually get into windows, but it locks up every few minutes. The Radeon has passive cooling, might it be overheating? The board doesn’t run Via chipset. And I was sure it was safe mode.

have you install the chipset drivers yet, your motherboard may require the sis chipset ide and agp driver.

I have installed the chipset drivers, and I beleive it is the ATI card. I managed to install updated drivers for it, but they only made the screen blank with a mouse at startup. I uninstalled them from safe mode, and my computer is recognizing the card as a generic VGA adapter, and there have been no freezes since. Do you guys have any idea on actually getting the Radeon drivers to work? I might be installing the wrong one as I have never owned a Radeon before. Thanks for all the replies!
