My computer froze last night while I was using it. Now when I try to restart it, it won't load windows. The computer posts fine and the bios recognizes all the drives and roms but won't start windows. I tried booting in safe mode, but the process hangs with this line:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\config\system

I tried booting straight from the winxp cd and doing a repair, but that gave me a blue screen that said something about a page file error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you also tried the other Safe Boot options:

-Safe Mode with Command Prompt only
-Last Good Configuration that worked

The Page File error you describe is interesting. I don't think the Paging File System should be causing any errors. All the Paging File is, is a virtual extension of your physical RAM. But since you have 512MB of DDR RAM, lack of memory shouldn't be an error.

Did you recently make any changes to your hardware config? Or have you recently tried to change the default BOOT.INI file? Either might cause bootup issues.

Sounds like you have a corrupted registry system file, I would boot form your XP CD to the Repair concel and run a dskchk /r then check out this link.

When I tried to restart using command prompt only, windows informed me that my computer was missing the system folder. I'm not sure how this could happen, but it explains why I can't log into windows.

I then tried to do a repair install from the winxp cd. After choosing which operating system (1: C:\windows) I got a blue screen that said
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I'm not sure what that means.

I did in fact recently change some hardware, my previous motherboard died and I got a replacement one yesterday. After the initial reinstall of the motherboard, my computer worked fine for several hours and then I began having my current problems. Thanks for your help so far, if you know anything else that might help, I'd appreciate it.

The PAGE FAULT is usually a memory problem. Try swapping out the memory sticks on the repair.
