Have you tried booting to safe mode with networking and if it boots, then rescanning? (It is possible that safe mode will only recognize VGA monitor?? not sure.) It is possible that you have a recovery partition from the factory that can return the computer to original factory state. Also it is possible that if your computer still has the windows sticker with the key, that you can borrow another windows XP disk of the same type (home, pro, etc) (but not HP or Compaq) and reinstall using your own key (look for at least sp2). Don't forget to completely format the hard drive (some say to delete the partition and repartition) using the XP disk to be sure. And don't forget that any recent hardware (video card?) will need it's drivers installed.
Post back details (model number, cpu, video, ram, exact windows version, etc.) for more specific help.
