Re-install the operating system again. This time partition the drive to a smaller partition ( I don't like partitions bigger than 100 gigs or so...just personal)

If it still happens then google for memtest 86 and follow the instruction to download it and prepare it for the media type you need for this computer...floppy or cd...

adjust your BIOS to boot to the proper media type and boot to the disc...allow it to run and check your memory sticks. You need no operating system to run memtest...if it finds any errors at all replace the guilty stick!

It is the disadvantaged who habitually elect Democrats on the belief of personal change---
yet they remain disadvantaged.

lurkswithin is probably right on target here. Reinstall XP, but instead of trying to install using the entire drive, format a chunk of the drive to install the XP to. (Less than 127 GB: 130048 MB) You can always resize the partition using a third-party partition manager after XP is running. Alternatively, you can use the built-in Disk Management to create a blank partition with the remainder of the drive space for your data.

If WinXP showed a default of 127GB there are two possible causes.

First is the hard drive properly identified by model and capacity in the start up screens?

Second, does your installation CD include at least service pack one?

Both the BIOS and the OS must be 48 bit LBA compliant in order for the 1TB drive to work properly. If the BIOS doesn't see the drive properly then you may need to use a controller card.

If the BIOS does see the drive correctly then installing any service pack will allow the full use of the drive. However, once Windows has been installed on the smaller partition you would need to use a third party partition re-sizer to make the boot partition larger.

I would recommend multiple partitions on a drive that size. Look at the links below for information on 48 bit LBA and partitioning strategies.

Going to disk management should allow access to the remaining unformatted space.

The fact that RAM worked with a prior OS is no absolute assurance it will work with the current OS.

Also, you may have bumped the RAM in the process of installing the new drive. Reseat the RAM and run memtest86.

Make sure no external (USB, firewire, etc) devices are connected.
