Win xp pro fresh install working fine on broadband connection till I installed aol, then no tcp/ip. Could ping loopback and 169... default ip address from windows. Xp did not detect any problem other than that it couldn't renew from dhcp server. Netbeui worked fine. Reinstalled xp, not aol, and all fine till I installed belkin network adapter, saw a message that winsock config had changed, then on reboot, down again. Reloaded aol, ( nothing to lose), and was able to connect to aol via modem, but no internet through aol either. Was able to get back going by using a restore point, but otherwise very frustating. No info at microsoft either on this problem. Working now but I won't install aol again on this machine, that's for sure, and I'll make sure to create restore points before I do anything involving network connections.
