I am having problems connecting to my broadband ISP ( what a nightmare) and was told I may have corrupt winsock files. I have the following winsock files on my pc:
winsock.dll c:\windows\system32
winsock.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache
winsock.dll c:\windows\options\cabs\
precopt1.cabwsock32.dll c:\windows\system32
wsock32.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache
wsock32.dll c:\windows\options\cabs\
precopy1.cabWhich exactly are needed for a broadband connection? I checked a friends pc running XP and broadband and the number of winsock files he has differ with mine. Any help would be appreciated as I am ready to reinstall 98 if I cannot resolve this issue.

? what is the connection problem?
are you getting a valid ip address?and can you both ping by name and ip address and get 4 sent and 4 recieved?
if any of the answers are no then its not a winsock issue.
aol is usually the program that breaks the xp winsock2 file.

c:\windows\system32\winsock.dll is the only one used by Xp. The others are backups or are used for installing. If it were corupt Xp would replace it automatically using the copy in c:\windows\system32\dllcache
If you want to make sure that it's not corupt click on start then run and type sfc /scannow If it's bad it will be replaced.
I'm with Richard I think your problem lies elsewhere.

Oops I meant to say that c:\windows\system32\winsock.dll and c:\windows\system32\wsock32.dll are the only two used by Xp.

Thanks Richard & Sandman.
Sorry I didn't state my connection problem.
I can ping my ISP by IP and name ok, I can ping my gateway ok, when I try to connect to internet I get page can't be displayed. I have the proper network settings, I ran sfs /scannow, I have uninstalled/reinstalled my network card, I show a valid IP address when I do ipconfig. My ISP tech told me it could be a DNS issue from a corrupt winsock file, that I am not receiving DNS information from ISP. I wasn't sure which winsock file to to replace.

Try this, click start then run and type in services.msc Make sure that the DNS client has not been disabled.
