Hi

I currently have a Sony Viao PC with dual boot OS's - Windows XP Professional (legally and uncracked) and Windows ME (illegal).

My problem is with Windows Update. The problem occurs when the update site tries to update it's software. I get Active X errors, and page cannot be displayed errors, etc. Back in December 2001, when i installed a cracked copy of windows xp professional MSDN: I have been having problems with Windows Update. With a cracked version of windows xp, i never got to access windows update. I know that know, that M$ was blocking users with illegal copies of xp from getting it's updates. I had tried everyting. Putting security settings in IE to their lowest; accepting all security warnings; adding update site to trusted sites; enable HTTP 1.1 proxy settings; disabling NAV 2002; disabling Norton's Personal Firewall 2002; deleting windows update folder in program files directory; i even went to the IE website and downloaded every update and fix for IE. None of these worked. After all that, i endured 2 bios updates, 6 clean installs of windows xp, and several repairs and upgrades. What will happen to me when M$ brings out the service pack for xp?

So then finally a few weeks ago, i got a legal copy of xp professional. and at that same time i found out that M$ fixed their windows update problems. So i was like sure that everything would run smoothly. Nothing worked. Everything was the same as when i had da illegal of copy of xp. Again i tried all possible solutions. Nothing worked. I got so fed of xp that i took if off and installed an illegal copy of Windows 2000. when i got to the windows 2000 update site, it now looked just like the xp update site. and it, of course, had all of the xp problems. So i when back to xp and i am now awaiting a solution to my problem

What am i to do? I tried contacting Micro$oft but they only reply once to my 9 emails.

Can someone please help me?

The problem for you if you have been barred is the way that Microshaft compose their cookies. I know that in MS office docs, the author properties are tied to the unique ID (serial number or MAC address) of the network card on that machine. If your machine has no network card, windoze constructs a virtual one 'somwhere'. It is possible that your OS is being identified as the same as when you were barred either because of this or because you are being cookied using the serial number of your processor. As an alternative you could try visiting http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true and doing the updates manually.

Hi again,

I have now installed the legal one. and the
problems are still there.

Thanks for the URL, Squiff. I let you know
if it works ok.

Anyother suggestions would be helpful,
because i need drivers for some of my
devices. Their manufacturer's websites have
don't have them yet.

What devices do you need drivers for? Did you do a clean, reformatted install of the XP Pro system?

I need drivers for basically everything, except my modem.

Windows Update will provide these correct drivers. That's where the problems is.

The URL that Squiff gave isn't working. It's the windows update catalog. Just like windows update, it too has to be update with newer update software. In other words i am getting the same problems with both sites.

Does anyone have any problems with Windows XP administrtation? When i try to install certain programs i get a message that says i don't have privilages. I am the only user set up on the computer. I guess that makes me the computer admin. but that ain't so.
