Windows crashed so I had to run install from original XP disk. This forced me to run a quick format and re-install but it kept looping saying the disk could not be found. I seemed to have now installed XP but Invalid boot.ini keeps flashing up on boot from the hard disk. Have run fixboot / bootcfg / chkdsk(no errors) from the install disk through recovery console but to no avail. Still it flashes Invalid boot.ini. Not sure where to go next.

... try tapping F8 @ boot-up select "safe mode WITH command prompt"
... from there type edit [PRESS ENTER]
... you may have to use the attrib /? command on the boot.ini file prior.
Grrrr

Won't run in safe mode. Only way to get to command prompt is through recovery console. It is really messed up.

See if this helps ----

"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you start your computerWhen you did the above commands, I guess you should have added a switch to the command, for it to fix something. Like this ---
bootcfg /rebuild

I tried everything the MS web site suggested including rebuilding using bootcfg. fixboot, fixmbr. Seems odd that the installation doesn't appear to complete yet says remove floppy disk at the end. I have to change boot options in the bios to the hard disk but it won't boot. The only way to get anywhere is through recovery console where I can get to dos but nothing I run lets me boot from the hard disk.

Also try here ----
http://support.microsoft.com/search...
Then in the top line, type
invalid boot.ini
Then click the 'Search' button at the bottom. There are two more articles that come up. They may help ???

One more suggestion from MVP Alex Nichol...
"Reboot, this time taking the immediate R option and if the CD letter is say K: give these commands:
copy K:\i386\ntldr C:\
copy K:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\
(two other files needed - just in case)1. Type: attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini del C:\boot.ini
2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild
which will get rid of any damaged boot.ini, search the disk for systems and make a new one. This might even result in a damaged windows reappearing; but gives another chance of getting at the repair

Thanks guys. Tried the MS website - no joy.
Tried Michael's suggestion - booted from HD and now sitting on black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner. Do I need to run recovery console again ?

Most of what I do here is to supply links to get information ---

black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner
Sometimes that occurs when CD is left in its Drive.

Thanks. I have seemingly exhausted the MS web site.
Still just sits on a black screen. Might try a friends XP install disk as I can't seem to find why it won't boot.
