XP will not shutdown

Intel D850GB MBO, 1.7 CPU, When i try to shut down windows. it hangs on shuting down page.Just refomated. Everything did work fine before. Just put the board back into the same case for a freind and it sound like the hard drive shutdown to fast. You can here the HD shut down. but the screen says shutting down. Iv tryed dif.HD,video cards,and ram,Please help....... Thanks for you time.

Thanks chuck I did install the SP1 it did nothing.Iv read the same pages nothing seems to be working.Why would it work at one time and not the next. Man is this Problem making me mad.Everthing is the same in the computer as before and now it just WILL NOT SHUT OFF. Thanks Chuck agian.

You might want to give these ago. They are Win98's trick so I don't know if it's the same with XP. Delete any *.tmp or *.bak files. Disable your virus scanner. These sometimes prevent clean shutdown. No guarantees-good luck

As for those files to delete, sorry I meant *.tmp and *.chk, not *.bak.
Summary: Windows Xp will not install on my machine something about hall.dll i have reinstalled the hall.dll file and it still wont go, so now when i boot my computer I get this nag that says cancle Windows XP...
